If you have no luck contacting your employer, contact the IRS for assistance at 1-800-829-1040. When you call, have the following information handy:

• The employer's name and complete address, including zip code, the employer’s identification number (if known), and telephone number,
• Your name and address, including zip code, Social Security number, and telephone number; and
• An estimate of the wages you earned, the federal income tax withheld, and the dates you began and ended employment.

If you are in a rush, use form 4852 (subsitute wage and tax statement. The point is to file one time and to file the 1040X if something changes in the future.

Yes you can file without your w2. you can ask the IRS for a form 4506 T in which you will give information about your job and your wages, etc from your last paycheck. you also can file your taxes on-line with a program like turbo-tax and use the information from your last paycheck stub of the year. the only thing with that is if your numbers don't agree with what your employer has reported you will get a call from the IRS. if you are unsure of what to do you can always request a duplicate copy of your w2 from your employer. the IRS call also assist you in this.

Since the 2006 W-2's aren't out yet, you're apparently talking about a previous year where you'll be filing late.

Try to get a copy from your employer at that time. If you can't, the IRS will still accept your return. You 'll need to have the exact numbers though, maybe from your last paycheck of the year. If you can't find that either, contact the IRS - the info would have been reported to them so they can help you file your late return. If it's a return from the last three years and you have a refund coming, you'll still get it. If you owe for whatever year this is for, there will be penalties and interest.

If you are referring to a previous year, yes you can file your return without your W2. However, the IRS has received your W2 information, and if your return does not agree with the information the IRS has, then you may get a letter from the IRS changing your return, with possible additional penalties and interest.

Therefore it is better to attempt to get the W2 from your former employer. However if that is not possible go ahead and do the best you can, as soon as you can. Use form 4852 and include it with your return.

No you can not file your income taxes with a W2 form...you can get a copy of your W2's from your employer of that year(or where you worked)..or you can call the Department of Revenue of your state and request that information.

Your employer is required to keep their copy - contact them and get another one. I believe you can still file w/out one, because the employer will file their copy. If you can't get a copy definitely file an estimated amount, so you don't get behind and get charged interest and penalties
