i very often find that i know things without ever being taught it or reading anyting on it. could it be power of elimination or deduction or is there something else going on here

Nothing known is absolutely spontaneous, which would mean your response would occur at the same time as the action.
The closest would be an unconscious pain reponse. Touch a hot stove for the first time and you automatically withdraw. The reaction is almost instantaneous, but not quite.
As to feeling like something is new to you and that there is no source for your information, lots of research has been done on this and the findings point to brain synapse connections forming when you "learn" something that are more complicated than the simple new idea would reqiuire on its own. Your memory may not make you aware of those connections, but they exist all the same.

I would say its learning something that was not intended to be educational
