see that hairstyle the girl's wearing? i've been thinking about getting that style for awhile now. only thing holding me back is that i'm african american, so as you can probably guess, my hair is textured differently than the woman's in this pic. [and yes, i know the typical african american wouldn't really go for a hairstyle like this, but i guess i have a thing for crossing the line?] so i guess what i'm really looking for is any opinions on whether or not you think this would work for my hairtype, how "extreme" i should go with the layers as a first timer, etc... [& of course i plan to have it done at a salon ☻]

my hair type:

relaxed [but right now it's braided so it can grow a little longer for this hairstyle]

length before braided : somewhere just beyond my shoulders

thick [ i heard thick hair works well for this hairstyle?]

i'm wondering, what kind of specific shag is this, because when you look up this hairstyle on search engines they never look like the one in the picture.

Be cautious with this style because the one thing i've noticed with "messy" hairstyles on other ethnic groups is that it looks good when they do it, but if you or I were to try it, it just looks like we didnt feel like grooming ourselves that day. However, I do think you can pull it off if you get your hair relaxed (unless you dont need to, because some people dont need to) get it layered (of course professionally), but dont go too extreme with the layers since it is your first time. After you get your desired look, keep it that way all day using the "bed-head" product line. Hoped this helped, good luck!

I actually went to high school with a mixed girl that had this hair cut. I always thought it looked really cute but a lot of black girls made fun of her because they said her hair looked dry. I don't really know anything about that though. I just thought it looked good. I dont think they actually did it to her face either.

ANYWAY. I don't think you should be afraid to cross social boundaries like this, I respect people who do these things; it's like a tiny step in the 'integration' and acceptance of all of the different races in America. People are still so separated.

How long is your hair right now and what color is it? How about the texture? You didn't really give us too much detail on your current style!

Sure, use a permanent and straighten your hair. You might still have to use an electric straightener. I would definitely recommend using some kind of gel or leave in conditioner though.

My cousin (who's African-American) has a hair style very similar to that and it looks really good on her...she does says its a pain sometimes to get all the curls out of her hair even though she does a permanent every 6 weeks.

Im African American and i think you could do it. But it wouldn't be exactly like the picture u would have to get a relaxer. My advice is that u go to a really good stylist so u feel more comfortable that he or she won't mess up. Not too long ago my sister got a hair cut like that and she didn't even need a relaxer. u might not even need one!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my hair is past nappy, but i pull that style off anytime of the day, and i don't get perms, it's alot easier to make a hump when your hair is thick because it makes it look fuller, if your hair is thick like poofy thick and you want it to look wavy thin then don't be afraid of a fony pony-in other words the royal 11[it's a ponytail] you can even spice it up a little bit by putting braids on the side in stead of makin it look like a straight ponytail[design draids] i prefer my real hair but thats just because i do it [and other peoples] and i can say what looks right on me and what doesn't you can pull it off trust me girl your hair can't possibly be more nappier/thicker than mine and i make chicks envy me cause mine come out better than theres and they got perms.keep it natural[your hair] good luck!!!!!

i don't want to be a spoilsport but i think if you do that style you'd regret it cos your hair isn't goingto be as obedient as her's and you might have hair flying in all directions sorry if that makes you feel bad just try something else.you might eventually use lots of things to make it relax and end up stressing your hair just be careful repairing hair damage can be very annoying i can tell you that for sure

Yes you would just have to go to the hairdresser and get it stragenten and cut like that. or like some of my african american friends they get a wig so that they can have there real hair to go home from school when they see parents

do whatever you want. nothing but your own opinion should hold you back. plus, i think u'd look good, if ur hairstyle is what i think it is. cause i've seen 2 types of african-american hairstyles - curly thick, and thick straight. if you have the second, it should totally work.

Well, of course, an african american can pull it off. ^^ so if you do get the cut, then you should take care of your hair, that's if you straighten it too. but i think it would look pretty awesome.
