No one knows. It's not documented in anything credible.
There is not a shred of contemporary evidence that points to the existence of Jesus. Everything written about his life (including his birth) was written years after his death.
It would be like the first writings about Abraham Lincoln came about in the 1900s--very suspicious.
Edit: Jackie sagaciously asks, "If he's the most important character in Christianity, then how can there possibly be no proof at all that Jesus never existed?" How indeed? The Romans have no record of Jesus's crucifixion. Such an important man (whose death heralded the ground heaving) surely would have been documented somewhere while he lived. Yet, he wasn't.

Good question!
Found some info here:
http://www.gods-kingdom.org/when_really_was_jesus_born.htm
Quote:
"...shepherds in Palestine were not out in their fields with their flocks that late in the year. Luke 2:8 says that on the night Jesus was born angels announced the birth of Jesus to shepherds in a nearby field. Most historians say that Jesus was probably born no later than October."

The only census around that time was in about 6AD, after the death of Herrod. That makes a mess of there story about Herrod wanting to kill all the babies.
So you see, nobody here can agree on a year so an actual date is out of the question.
You would think that someone who caused such a great commotion woukd have some accurate details recorded about him. They don't even know when he was killed

How come everyone is saying that there is no proof when Jesus is born, or that he ever lived? If he's the most important character in Christianity, then how can there possibly be no proof at all that Jesus never existed?

There is no proof that Jesus was ever a real person and the more research I do the more convinced I am that he never existed at all.
Estimates based on the references to events range over at least ten years. There are conflicts between the described events and recorded events, notably the census, and King Herod's death.
edit: I like Lisa's link but it just serves to re enforce my belief that Jesus is mythical. So much speculation about the matching of contradictory events makes me suspicious.
There is no evidence of a census before the death of Herod. Even Josephus makes no mention of it.
Even if a census had been conducted they never conducted it like it is described in the gospels. The Romans conducted census the way everybody else ever has. They tell everybody to stay where they are and send people to count them. If you made everybody go to different places to be counted can you imagine the confusion that would cause.
Lets say you did that in the USA. Everybody had to return to the city of their birth to be counted. Half the country would be on the move while you were trying to count it, impossible.
Thanks for the thumbs down people, they make me more certain that Jesus is mythical.

The only clear indication in the bible is the statement that shepherds were watching their flocks by night. This only happens in the spring when the shepherds are watching over the new born lambs.

Actually, we know that John the Baptist was born 6 months ahead of Jesus. John the Baptist was born during the Jewish month that falls around March/April (Nisan) which would have placed Christ’s birthday around SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER (Tishri). Yes, Jewish months are 2 months long. Christ was 33.5 years old when he died, and he died on Nisan 14 (which is ALWAYS the same day EVERY YEAR on the Jewish Calender). It falls on the FIRST FULL MOON after the VERNAL EQUINOX - meaning the 1st Full Moon AFTER February 22nd). So, around 2 weeks AFTER Feb. 22nd, would fall Passover (NOW called The Lord's Supper). The day on which Christ Jesus died. He died on Passover, because on Passover, they slaughtered the lamb, spread its blood over the door so that the Angel of Death would pass them by in Egypt and then Christ WAS the Lamb of God, which the Lamb represented EVERY YEAR until Christs death. When Christ died, there was no more need for Passover, so it became The Lord's Supper. So, if we count BACK from The Lords Supper (1st week of March - 6 months backwards would be October). So, AGAIN, we see it was the first of October, the last of September.
While Saturnalia IS celebrated on December 25th, it was ORIGINALLY the date of the Sun God Tammuz, who's sign was the Cross or T. He was the son of Nimrod and Semiramis (who had herself declared a Virgin Mother of the Sun God and then had him sacrificed on December 25th in celebration to the sun). Nimrod was the Mighty Hunter in OPPOSITION to God; he was also Ham's (Noah's son) great-grandson. So, we see here that as far back as Nimrod & Semiramis, they were worshipping the Sun God and Cross on December 25th in Babylon.
Astarte/Easter is the worship of the Fertility Goddess. Her symbol is the Egg and the Rabbit. Two things that denote life and reproduction, they have NOTHING to do with Christ’s resurrection, except to bring more people to church.
A Priest wrote an EXCELLENT book ON every holiday, its called, The Two Babylon’s, by the Rev. Alexander Hislop.

PS You may wonder, why did God not put Christs birthday in the Bible. Because on the 2 Birthdays mentioned in the Bible, someone died. On Pharoahs it was the Baker, and on Herods it was John the Baptist. Also, the Bible says clearly, "better is the day of your death than the day of your birth." Meaning that on the day of your death, you have lived and fully made a name with your God. So it should be a time of rejoicing, not depression, after all you have returned to your loving father. Also, Christ Jesus' had performed his earthly duty and we were saved, making his death the most imporant death of all, that's why the day of his death is recorded but not his birth. IT WAS HIS DEATH THAT MATTERED.

none -no proof whatsoever no one really knows and we celebrate on false grounds too -Christmas honestly was borrowed(well more like stolen)from pagans-really --That is why there are "trees" and Presents it was to celebrate the Winter Solstice--It's the same with Easter--baby bunnies and eggs and that was also a Pagan Holiday-celebrating birth and the renewal of life -not because Christ "rose"from the dead

According to historians, it was actually closer to February/March. And it was somewhere between 7 - 4 BC.
In a nutshell, no, he wasn't born on that day. That was the day of a Pagan celebration, so the Christian church took it over to eliminate Paganism and promote their "new and improved" religion.

I don't think there is anything in the bible that says Dec. 25th but I would guess that there was a census then that His mother and father had registered his birth , plus his apostles would have known and it just passed down over the years.
