Slightly safer, we're still a hairs breadth from utter destruction. consider the incident in 1995 when the Russian almost launched against NATO and the US after they thought a Norwegian scientific satellite was launched thinking they were under attack. For the first time in history, the Russian 'suitcase' with the launch codes was activated....and this was POST Cold War.

Nuclear war is not only possible, its probable. In view of the aging Russian early warning systems, a nuclear war could happen at any time. You hear of all the talk about Iran and terrorists getting ahold of A nuke. Little is heard about the two bulls in the glass shop.

The arsenals of the US and Russia are the scary scenarios when you're talking nuclear war. Not so much the US causing it, but mainly from an accidental launch by the Russians thinking that NATO or the US launched against them. It nearly happened in 1995,

No, it has lead to bigger problems and more incipient enemies.

When the world had two super powers, people in other countries felt comfortable with each keeping the other in check. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, America hating has been continually on the rise, by people around the world. No one is comfortable with a singular super power. Because of this, America is getting more and more enemies. The Islamic extremists are an enemy we have no idea how to combat. The world is a far scarier place now.

No way. When the cold war ended, everybody dumped their weapons cheap onto the 3rd world market to make money. That's how Iraq, Iran, Korea, acquired the military technology that's making them such pains in the ars today. At least we and the Russians could trust each other to not start nuclear war-- depite all the hype.

Yes.

For periods of the cold war, both the Soviet and the USA militaries were prepared to launch all out nuclear strikes. While both are still prepared to launch strikes as needed, we are far less likely to launch any attacks instantly. Since tensions are low, I imagine leaders on both sides would be less likely to launch first strikes, and they would probably be less likely to launch on warning of a first strike.

YES. MANY COUNTRIES HAVE NUKES BUT NONE WANT TO COMMIT SUICIDE AND USE THEM UNLESS ATTACKED. MUTUALLY ASSURED DESTRUCTION. SOMEDAY, IF WE SURVIVE, WE WONT NEED THEM. PREDICTION: A LIMITED NUCLEAR EXCHANGE IN THE MIDDLE EAST WILL TEACH THE WORLD A GORY AND TERRIFYING LESSON.
