Not if they are used correctly. you have to make sure you use only the higher grade, or K1 kerosene for indoor use and keep a good wick in the heater to avoid smoking. When the wicks burn down and need replacing the heaters have a bad odor. We use ours when the power goes out. We light it outside and let the fumes burn off before bringing it inside the house. We also take it outside when we are ready to turn it off. This keeps the house from having the smoky kerosene smell.

It is a good idea to have some form of ventilation, such as a window raised about an inch or so while you are using the heater to avoid carbon monoxide buildup.

Not if they are used correctly in well ventilated place. You have to make sure you use only the higher grade, or K1 kerosene for indoor use and keep a good wick in the heater to avoid smoking. In Closed places the fumes of Kerosene can catch fire and is dangerous for people and child both.

They are only dangerous if you use them in enclosed spaces. If they cannot vent the burnt fuel it can cause carbon monoxide poisoning. And, of course, they can burn you :-)

I would not run one in an unventilated area. The carbon monoxide build up could be lethal.
