switch it this one sounds mean and will take a long time to tame as well as a lot of bites to endure

I had bought a 7 month Cockatiel for my son, 4 yrs. ago. His name is Speedy he's a little nipper. But alot tamer than at first. You have to trim their primary feathers (the longer ones) that keeps then from flying too high most of the time. But, somehow they know then there not so tough. Although the beek is a problem. I have been nipped bad from birds cause my dad and I used to breed them in the 80's. Mine is 20 yrs old and a sweetheart because I hand raised him and trained him. I had him when he hatched in an incubator. You should use your hands to train him even with those workers gloves. If she's not a big nipper just use your hands. Get her to climb on your hands by pushing your finger against her chest so she can climb on but do this while she is on the floor in the corner against the wall. And always be with her and talk to her. But, in the beginning there should be only one person training or it won't work. Then when she gets acustomed to one person then the other person can try.

My tiel didn't like to be touched and to some extent still is that way. We kept talking sweetly to him and let him out of the cage once in a while. He now loves to come out at dinner and demands that mommie (my mom: his Mommie!) give him something. The tiels still have a little "wild" in there nature and it just takes time and trust to work with him. You'll be surprised at how "buddy" expresses himself he knows my moms footsteps and dinner time! Once in awhile he has a temper tantrum and at the most he makes a squauking noise. I usually counter with whistling the same sound and before long we're in tune to each other. Your bird may have some qualities you haven't discovered yet. But just a note: Buddy will only let mom hold his whole body in her hands and I think every time she does this he squauks and she tells him too bad; "i'm the mommy" ect. He does eventully calm down and tolerate her :) ! Buddy still makes an awfull hiss sound when I put my hand in the cage but, Thats buddy.. It sounds like your guy likes the scratches behind the head and thats a great place to build your relationship. I sort of feel sorry for birds. Most birds love to be with other birds and they always seem to have a lot to say to each other.(bird talk)
our pets don't know the wild life outside but just the cage. We don't move buddys cage much and when we let him out he usually returns to his cage because he knows thats his home. I would say give your guy a chance unless he's abusive and screams continually. Even so; sometimes we put a towel over buddys cage and after a half hour at most he calms down. We've only done this on rare occasions. Best wishes! Bill

My mother-in-law has a cockatiel that doesn't let anyone touch him either. If we put our hands in the cage, he flies all around inside the cage, like we're going to kill him. But occassionally, when putting our hand in the cage, he will just sit, pensively, on the perch and peck our finger ( it doesn't hurt). I bird-sat for 3 weeks and he became much more calm. He got out of the cage 1 time, and actually let me pick him up with a towel. I think patience and a lot to TLC would go a long way for your mom's bird.

Every Chance you get each day, walk around through the house
with it on you shoulder and that way, it will more easily bond to you and give it a treat now and then with you fingers. I hope this will help. I has to learn to trust your hands.
