She is about five months old. She is some sort of terrier mix. I got her at the humane society about two weeks ago and named her Hippo. She is already attached to me, and is smart and obedient and an all around good dog. And she's beautiful, to boot!

She is scheduled to be spayed at the Williamson County Humane Society on January 16th. I am not considering canceling the appointment, but rather asking what this humane and necessary procedure will do to her character. I know it varies from individual to individual, but a general idea would be nice. Thanks Yahoo! Answers!

She will have no sex drive, and her personality will remain the same as it would be if she was kept in tact.

Thumbs Up for being a responsible dog owner.

I adopted a dog 2 days after she got spayed. Most shelters require that dogs be spayed/neutered before they get adopted out. Her attitude was energetic, hyper, and curious. The discharge said for her to not be active for 2 weeks; however keeping her contained and inactive was impossible because she just was too hyper and curious. The sitches they put in her were self disolving and she kept licking @ her stiches and I had to keep stopping her. Within a week the wound was heal and she was still acting like when I first got her.

You should not cancell the appointment because there will be no attitude change (perhaps groggy and sleepy, but these effects will wear off).

There are benefits to spaying. I know you are scared for your dog and you have all the right to be, but your dog will not change in fact your dog will be more affectionate (my dog is clingy). Good Luck.

It won't effect her temperament. In some cases spaying/ neutering changes the activity level of some dogs (i.e. a normally hyper dog might mellow out), but it's rare. I've had a couple of sweet female dogs spayed in the past, but it didn't change their attitudes one bit. Just show her the same love and attention like you always do, and things will be fine.

Spaying will NOT change personality..it is what it is....all spaying does is get rid of hormone driven behaviors, eliminate/reduce the risks of reproductive cancers, mamamry cancer and some very serious often fatal uterine infections and eliminate the risk of pregnancy.

where i live if you get a dog from the shelter, they make sure you have them spayed, before you take them. I had 3 of my dogs spayed and their personality stood the same, you just don't have to worry about them having babies.

I used to have a miniature schnauzer and it didn't affect her personality at all. Go for it and that way you don't have to worry about her bleeding all over everything or buying special k9 panties and pads.
