jetBlue goes to Long Beach, Burbank and Ontario ... Southwest goes to all So CA airports except Palm Springs and Long Beach ... so depending on where you want to go, the prices should be mostly competitive.
Orange County Airport typically charges premium fares - and is the most expensive ... the others depends on city and date.

Well LAX is certainly the cheapest, due to the amount of flights and people that use it. It's just very busy and takes a lot more time to go through check in and security. If your flight allows you to go with Jetblue, you can fly into Long Beach. If you can use Southwest, you can fly into Burbank, Santa Ana, or Ontario.
Also, you need to consider where in Southern California you'll be staying, as it is a rather large area. I recommend choosing the airport closest to your destination, and then comparing it to the cost of flying into LAX. If it is $200 or more cheaper to fly into LAX, you'll save on the total trip.

They're all about the same. I've flown into Ontario, Long Beach, & LAX. They were each one the cheapest at the time. Just check around. Long Beach was the easiest and fastest in and out. LAX can be a pain. Ontario is a real nice airport but it is a ways out unless you are visiting Riverside or San Bernardino areas.

It depends on how far you are going.
If you are not going very far (i.e. San Francisco, Oakland, Scarmento, Las Vegas, or Phoenix) that all of the airports will be the same price (EXCEPT Orange County) and I would recommend using Ontario.
If you are going cross country -- then you will just have to put with LAX, since they offer the lowest fares and the most non-stop connections. Fares will run $50 to $100 higher on cross country trips from Ontario, Burbank, or Orange County.

It depends on the airline, what airport you are flying out of, ect. Most mass sites (orbitz, yahoo travel, ect) have a little box you can check just below where you type in the airport that says "check surrounding airports" or something like that. Check it and it will automatically show you the least expensive airport to fly into (or out of)

Off-peak you can find dirt cheap Southwest flights into LAX. Other than that, check out Burbank, Long Beach, Orange County, San Bernardino & Ontario Airports. Palm Springs is pretty expensive so I would avoid that...plus it's 2.5hrs from downtown LA...

The airport doesn't affect the price of your ticket, except nominally. Where you're coming from does. Not all airlines use all airports. Shop around for prices, specials, etc. on a site like orbitz or travelocity.
