When reporting a crime there are a few things that you should think of. The problem with some crimes that are reported is that there is not sufficient evidence to prove who did the crime. This doesnt mean that all crimes shouldn't be reported because in some cases like stolen credit cards, the report done will back up your claim to your credit card company that the cards were in fact stolen. Most companies now require a police report in order to support your claim. When a crime is reported where there are no suspects and no evidence there is really not alot for police to investigate. If a person can give a name or specific times or places or anything of that nature, then the crime is alot more likely to be solved. Cases where people dont know who did it, dont know when it happened, and cannot offer any information about the crime are not as likely to get solved and therefore don't get as much attention from police and detectives.

Reporting a crime always works. Once you report it the police have a record of the offense. The person is not always arrested at once, but that doesn't mean that the reporting didn't work. In the case of the stolen credit cards the police would move swiftly if the report was from a victim who had lost property. If someone else reported the use, the police might be slower just because they would have to go search to see if a crime was really committed anywhere. Even then, they would log the report and take it seriously and, at the least, try to match it up with any subsequent report by a victim.

Reporting crimes actually works. If you report an auto stolen, a report is filed with the NATB, national auto theft bureau. If the VIN shows up anywhere for any reason, the police are notified.

If you report a crime and the police don't respond, report it directly to the Chief of Police. If that does not work, report it to the county district attorney. Don't let crimes go unsolved or unpunished.

It would depend how big or small the crime is.

If it was murder or major theft (E.I. Robbing a bank armed) then yes it would eventually be visualized and taken under hand.

If it was a small shop lift (E.I. Shop lifting a pencil case) or pick pocketing a few dollars - Then most likely not, considering police have much on their hands and at get at least ten calls per minute.

Obviously, if it was a child saying something that would seem unbelievable then it wouldn't be taken seriously, but it would be taken if it would get out of hand.

The problem is that many peole do report crimes and then back out when they have to appear as witnesses. People are scared of retailation and many won't go the extra step to follow through with a report. And becasue of some of these scared people, thugs get the chance to hit the streets again and continue their crime spree.

Absolutely. Some people think we don't care. Sometimes we have higher priority cases that the public doesn't know about. My department takes all calls and cases seriously. We work for the public and are paid by the public. Don't ever hesitate to tell the Police about anything.

First they always do a report, next things like credit cards has to be reported for you to have protection.

And at times since they put a warning on the card, if it is used again, they may catch them.

Oh no they take it seriously! For example, there was this iradic driver on the road the other day, and my friend had a bunch of his children in the back. He pulled alongside the car and shouted to him to stop driving like a maniac, and he said if the driver didn't stop that he was going to call the cops. Well the iradic driver dared him to! And my friend called 911 right away, in less than two minutes there was a cop tailing the guy. We followed them, and he was getting a ticket. Cops do take it seriously, it's their duty to investigate tip offs.

The magic word here is "words." If you called in a report by phone, or spoke face to face with a cop or investigator, anything can happen to your report, Pay attention now:
ALWAYS keep it in writing. After a phone in or in person complaint filing, Write up your complaint in a statement form, including ALL names, dates places, items of property involved, proofs of ownership, loss, physical abuse, assault etc... then send it to the agency and agent that originally answered your call and took the initial information, with copies to the bank, Mayor, County Commissioners, Police Chief, Sheriff, and State Attorney General. Watch how quick they respond to your complaint... ALWAYS leave a BIG paper trail.... that always gets their attention.

I am a former police officer and I can honestly tell you that most of the time it does not work. I am not going to make any new friends with this but I believe cops are the second laziest people on the earth, second only to firemen.

The only way that I have seen policemen get to work is if the citizen stays on their case. If you bother them they will do their jobs to make you go away.
