i have a conviction for theft of employer over 4 years ago and have been sent to a young affenders prison for 3 months, i've been clean since then and would like to know if that would damage my chance of becoming a police officer in the future. the theft was small, £1,700 was taken and i regret it.

Any criminal record will bar you from a career in the police.

Small theft is a can of beer from an off licence not £1,700 is not pocket change, sorry you absolutely no chance of becoming a police officer.

The policecouldyou? website states that

although you may still be eligible to join the police service if you have minor convictions/cautions, there are certain offences and conditions that will make you ineligible. If you are at all unsure, contact your chosen force for more information.

Don't think that a theft of £1,700 will be seen as a "minor offence".

I hope that you ignore Hannie M's advice, because if you follow it in Britain then you will commit an offence under Section 16 of the Theft Act 1968 - obtaining a pecuniary advantage by deception.

Unless I am very much mistaken, you are not likely to become a police officer in Britain, as you have obviously breached the trust of your employer before.

I currently specialise in dealing with offenders who steal from their employer, and it is the most interesting work I have done since joining the police service as a very young man and dealing with offenders. Not too many of my dealings result in as serious a result as imprisonment, so yours must have been viewed dimly by the magistrates / judge at the time, and I predict that police authorities will respect that view and decline your application, much as you regret your actions, for which you deserve credit.

The Police certainly do a criminal check on yourself and your close family and will possibly accept such petty crimes such as stealing apples or breaking someone's window.... petty crimes, but what you did sounds a bit more serious. I suggest that if you want to join the police then you should enquire about their criminal checks by speaking to the recruitement officer because some forces don't do the criminal checks until the end of the recruitement procedure (this can take up to a year ) so it would be madness to go right through the procedure only to fail right at the end.

You stole your Employer? That's amazing...
I guess you stole from them.
Get a grip, get a life, you would be a great witness in a court case. Lots of questions about your crime rather than the defendants. At least you'd be able to explain to the people you arrested what happens at court and in prison.

I am not sure how it works in Britain, but in the United States it would be very hard to become a police officer with that on your record, unless you committed the crime before your eighteenth birthday, in which case, it is not on your criminal record.

The police will carry out a CRB check on you. You will have to declare the offence and it is highly likely you will not be accepted into the force because of this.

you should look into the rehabilitation of offenders act.

http://www.lawontheweb.co.uk/rehabact.htm

might be a bit soon to apply but wouldn`t rule out acceptance in future. Good luck the country needs more officers with perspective.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm now let me think ? Theft is theft is theft ........and "it was only £1700......." ??????????????
sorry im struggling with this one.
As far as im aware once you are CRB checked well thats lights out .
If you are serious about applying dont even think of hiding it because that tells a whole lot more about you.

Good luck

Yes, suggest you follow a career course not involving law enforcement.
The question would make me think that the entrance exam may be too difficult for you.

You can apply, but you must disclose the conviction. It is up to the police department whether they will accept your application or not.
