It is called Waldorf Salad and it is actually quite good.
Created at New York's Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in 1896 not by a chef but by the maître d'hôtel, (dining room manager) Oscar Tschirky, the Waldorf salad was an instant success.
The original version of this salad contained only apples, celery and mayonnaise. Chopped walnuts later became an integral part of the dish. Waldorf salad is usually served on top of a bed of lettuce.

hiya
this would be a basic waldorf salad mix
like this is a bit of an aquired taste really
there's several ways to make this a really sexy salad ideal as a starter for dinner parties !
select the apple you like the most
red apples are sweeter than green but that doesn't always work well with the oiliness of the mayonnaise
the addition of lime juice and a little zest works well
toasting the walnuts lightly before adding will release their oils and intensify the flavour
roasting garlic cloves for 15 minutes in the skin and then mashing when cool and adding makes a subtle difference as well
different lettuces make a difference
some fresh chopped parsley will enhance as well
i hope thats given you soem ideas !!
