I am a teacher in a middle school. I think this is an appropriate time for your child to have a cell phone if....
your child participates in after school activities, such as sports, clubs, tutoring, etc. The secretaries in my building are often posessive of their phones. But times for clubs, sports and tutoring can change do to illnesses, weather, etc. Most clubs in my building have specific pick up times for parents. The cell is very handy to remind parents that the club meeting is over. (or a teacher is sick and can't stay for an activity)

However.... if that child gets in trouble with cell phone, ie it rings in class, the child text messages or runs up the phone bill, then the phone should be taken away.

I would say when they start high school. I would be worried that before then, they don't understand the full responsibility of having a cell phone. I had an 11 year old nephew who traded his cell phone for a game boy!! I think by high school they wouldn't be as easy to bully and take from a child, and they understand what minutes and usuage is.

My 9 year old daughter wants one but I told her once she is in Middle school I will get her one. Ill be getting her a prepaid cell phone so she can learn responsibility concerning the minutes. I was once against kids having cell phones until a 13 year old was abducted in a nearby city a couple years ago. She had her cell in her backpack and was able to turn it on and call 911. I changed my mind as soon as I heard that story.

although cell phones werent even thought of let alone a necessity when i was a kid i do believe that in todays world there is a need for them personally i like the disney mobile ones that let you control their usage and also serve as a gps so that you can keep an eye on what they are really doing when not in your sight we all know teenagers like to fib about where they are going and who they will be with with that phone if he says he is staying the night with tom you can be sure that is where he really is without too much invasion of his privacy like say following him around checking on him and they let you control the usage so he isnt using it at school or using it too much where he would run up a bill my 10 yr old brother goes down the street to play with friends and is usually not inside near a phone so my mom got him one so if she wants him home she doesnt have to call all of his friends houses to try to find him she can just call him and tell him to come home for dinner or whatever i guess it depends on if you think the need is there for one if he just wants it to sit around the house and talk where he could be using a home phone id say not yet but if it would be useful for you to keep in contact then maybe the time is right

How old is your child? Personally when they are old enough to pay for the plan is the right age for them to have a cell phone.

When they can pay for at least HALF of the plan. The best thing is to get them a prepaid phone plan and make them pay for the minutes themselves. They will then learn just how much money they WASTE on text messages (which can cost up to four times what a PHONE call costs).

Well, if your child must have one, junior high would probably be the best time to get them one. That's when they really branch away from you and begin depending more on friends, so a phone is a great way to stay in touch with them.
