The exact date of origin of the Shih Tzu is not known, but evidence
of its existence has come to us from documents, paintings and
objects of art dating from A. D. 624. The smallest of these dogs
resembled a lion, as represented in Oriental art. "Shih Tzu" means
"lion". The Shih Tzu is reported to be the oldest and smallest of the
Tibetan holy dogs, the lion being associated with the Buddhist
deity. These dogs were bred by the Chinese court and from them
the dog we know today as the Shih Tzu developed. They are also
called "the chrysanthemum-faced dog" because the hair grows
about the face in all directions.

Chinese.

"Shih Tzu" was the name of one of the most beautiful/stunning women in the history of China (according to legend). Her name was borrowed to become the name of a breed of dog known for it's beauty and elegance...hence the breed name "Shih Tzu".

"Shih Tzu" meaning "lion" in Mandarin is a misconception. It's what I mentioned in the above paragraph.

(Chow Chows, not Shih Tzu, are what we called lion dogs in Mandarin).

We own one They are Chinese....the story of how they were finally smuggled out of China is very sad and brutal.

If one was bought and was to be taken out of China, they were fed ground glass that killed them before they had a chance to get them out and breed them.

I believe it was in the 1960's before a mating pair were finally gotten out of China and started breeding them. Others were also gotten out soon after.

Shih Tzus are considered royalty in China...
