Your dad should be just fine. Having an appendectomy is one of the simplist surgeries out there. Actual time in the OR suite is about 30 minutes. Then an overnight stay in the hospital and go home the next. Depending on the surgeon, the approach can be done laproscopically through the belly button or a small 1 inch incision near the belt line, so scars are minimal.
Complications occur with any surgery, no matter how small. Complications include reaction to the anesthesia, malignant hyperthermia, or a ruptured appendix. In either case, all these situations are handled in the OR and taken care of before going up to his room. I know its tough to relax with the unknown, but I imagine your dad will be fine. Hope this helps, feel free to email me if you have any other questions.

The human appendix has no apparent function however if it is infected then it must be removed. This is called appendicitis. It hurts when it is infected and must be removed so the bacteria doesn't spread... otherwise it shouldn't hurt. Your dad will feel much better =] In fact scientists say that overtime due to evolution we will be born without appendix's because they have no function. Theres nothing to worry about =]

It is a routine operation today. When I was a little kid, I had a ruptured appendix. The doctor was an idiot and told my mom on the phone that it sounded like the flu. So, for 24 hours I was in agony. The next day she found another doctor who made a housecall. He knew what it was, and I was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance. They did emergency surgery that saved me.

I am not a medical personnel, but I have never heard of anyone getting hurt from it. Of course there are medical mishaps, but they're very much out of the ordinary. Try not to worry.

I had appendicitis it was the worst pain ever, and after the surgery it hurt to sit up, laugh, cough, anything that put stress on my stomach. but they gave me some awesome pain killers (diluted) so it wasn’t really that bad.
oh and driving sucks to cause the seatbelt goes right across the incision : (
