New Year resolution is to lose weight and to assist in this I plan going to the gymn 2-3 times a week for about 45-60 minutes each time. Should I spend this time on weights or exercise machines

A bit of both would probably be best.

I'm sure I read somewhere that muscle burns off fat, so you might want to concentrate on getting your muscles toned to help with losing weight.

You should do both.
Try and exercise in the morning, before breakfast! This is because the sugar level in your body will be low, which means you will burn off more. Also start with some lights weights, don't go too crazy! you don't want to build muscle you want to tone and burn fat. On each different weight exercise to start with try and do 3 sets of 25 reps, then slowly increase after a few weeks. Then after weights do cardio.

Good Luck!

cardio is good to lose Wight, but mostly good for your heart. you only burn calories while you are doing the exercise.

lifting weights on the other hand is better, have you ever lifted before and felt sore after? well you should be sore if you lift properly, and you actually burn calories the whole time your muscles are sore.

so a lot of ppl skip lifting because they don’t want to get "too big" but if you are really trying to lose weight, then lifting weights in the most effective way combines with a decent diet.

Both, but if stuck for time then cardio to lose weight.

They reckon first thing in the morning is best. Your body has low energy reserves so it has to eat into its fat stores for you to perform physical activity. Thus you burn more fat. When you do lose the weight you'll want to do a weight programme to tone your body up or else you'll still be flabby.

If I were you, I'd do both. If you are going to go 3 times a week. One day do cadio stuff, then on the other days you could do a mix of cardio and weights

I would do mostly cardio. You can lift wiehgts and do a lot of supersets to keep the heart rate up. If you combine the two in the same day, keep at least 6 hours between the two.

lol at alll the answers, ^^^^ do ur research ppl.
to loose weight, u should lift weights first as it empties all ur glucose stores in ur body (whatevr food u ate and carbs) and when u do cardio ur body will use its remaining energy stores which is fat.

Edit: Doing 60 minutes of cardio is toomuch and will only result in muscle loss, which will make u weaker. google Interval training

also More muscle = higher metabolism = faster fat burning

Cardio will burn fat the fastest, but if you can squeeze in weight training, I strongly recommend it. Adding muscle mass will help assimilate body fat and enable you to reach your goal faster.
