I've been singing for quite some time, and for the last year I get really bad headaches and jaw aches the next day after doing alot of singing. Was wondering if it can be my TMJ?? These arent normal headaches, I really cant think the whole day and really wanted to give up on singing cause they are really bad. thanks for your help!!

I get a similar head/ jaw ache and I've figured out what it is. I'm clinching my jaw unknowingly. So I try and relax my jaw when stressed by opening my mouth slightly and letting my jaw relax.
I believe TMJ you have to have a clicking jaw. Does it click? Your dentist would know.

I've been singing since I was 3 and I'm 18 now. I was a student at a conservatory and have been through what you're describing.

Do you thrust your jaw forward when you sing? I know that if you're belting a high note there can have a tendancy to thrust the head forward putting strain on the jaw and at the very top of the spine, thus causing a headache. Does this resonate?

Before you sing, do a lot of diction warmups. Work your jaw and then proceed to sing.

Hope this helps. Sing on!

it sounds like maybe TMJ. it strains your jaw from singing or it could be the tension of the muscles when your singing. try to take some ibriprofrin at night for inflamation that might help so you dont get a headache in the morning.

It's likely because you're putting a strain on your jaw, neck, and other muscles to stretch your voice in ways that aren't natural for you. I'm sure you sing very well, but if you have to struggle to hit a note, you should try a different song, or try using your voice in a way that's more natural for you.

Sounds to me like TMJ also, go to a maxofacial surgeon or orthodontist and be fitted for a splint to sleep in at night to help with your bite.....that should help put things in the jaw back in line for you during your sleep and maybe ease the pain the next day...

Increases during bed time means inflammation . When you sleep the blood supply goes more to your face causing more inflammatory reactions so more pain. The pain is in the socket ( dry socket or post operative trauma ) you feel it in some other areas because it's a referred pain you might feel it in your neck , throat, head ...etc but it's coming from the socket.

are you singing from the gut .. or from the throut.. if you are singing from the throut and sometimes trying to reach notes this will give you head aches.. but seeings tho you have been singing for a long time you should be using your gut.. i also got headaches from singing but this is if i sang toooo much in one night..

your probably extending your mouth too "open"
your mandible (aka Jaw) is connected to your head so its possible
the strain could of been channeled through your head too.

its recommended you ask your doctor for professional advice

if singing is worth everything in this world to you then don't give it up. sometimes doing the things you love the most to make your life interesting and exciting leads to death.
