I agree with all the above and wish to add that if you are interviewing for a law job or legal field, please go with either black or navy blue suit with a white or light colored shirt. The socks should match the pants and belt should match the shoes .
In the case of a woman, the handbag should match the shoes and always always go with a panty hose if you plan to wear skirts.
The more conservative you are, the better. No plunging necklines and jazzy colors please. Hope it helps..and good luck with the interview.
Last but not the least. No matter how well you dress, if you do not carry yourself with confidence, all your efforts go a waste. So please do walk with your head held high, back straight and always give a firm handshake with abundant eye contact.

Formal dress for an interview implies a business suit. Men wear pants with a matching jacket, a dress shirt, and a tie. Women wear a conservative dress skirt (at or below the knee) or slacks with a matching suit jacket, and a nice blouse.

Nice shoes are important too - no flip-flops, open-toed sandals, or athletic shoes. Minimal jewelry is best, and avoid perfume or cologne as this can be much stronger than you think.

I have always been told that you should dress appropriately for the job you are applying for. If you are applying at a high paying job you would of course wear a business suit, but if you are applying for somewhere like Wal-mart you're going to look like an idiot walking in there in a suit or for a construction job for that matter! Where ever the interview is for.. take the normal business attire and go one step up. (Grooming is very important too.. don't go over the top with it/don't wear too much cologne or product)... This is assuming you are a guy. Of course for women it would be nothing too revealing, no heavy perfume or makeup. Just use your better judgement.

You have to have in mind, that in any interview the first look is very important. From the idea that the interviewer makes from you when he/she sees you at first time, depends so much.
As almost all the replies say, formal dress is tie, jacket or a business suit. Even, as you are in winter now, you can wear an overcoat on the jacket..
Good point for who said about the shoes. Dont forget about them.

GOOD LUCK !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Suit and tie if you are a man. A dress/skirt or pant suit if you are a women in cloth that is not denim. No running shoes either.

Wearing a nice dress to an interview is good (with no cleavage showing and no sparkling stuff on it). Most men make a great impression in a suit and tie.

Business interview would require suit and tie and please make sure the shoes are shined.
Formal on the other hand usually refers to after 5 wear and could mean anything from a nice suit, to a tuxedo, to a white dinner jacket depending on the situation. For women it is a completely different situation.

I think a nice business suit would be appropriate. You always want to outdress your interviewer in an interview. That's the name of the game.
