I went to the doctor because I have been feeling foggy, tired, headachy, ALWAYS freezing cold and very irritable at work and around other people. The part that had me rushing to the doc was the fact that I woke up one morning and the hair on top of my head had turned crinkly and wiry out of nowhere! It also began to fall out over the next few days. Every morning I wake up with MORE crinkly hair and it's a huge bummer.
We agreed a TSH test was in order, he looked at my crinkly hair and it was the first thing out of his mouth.
So I get my lab results and my TSH is at 5.3, the high end of the test states 5.5 (which means it would be "flagged" at 5.5 as a problem)
I think 5.3 is a bit too close to "high". So... I talk with the doctor and he says ALL of my tests came back within normal range (I also had a platelet test that was flagged at 407! waiting on his reply for that)
Anyone think the TSH is high and what should I do about this? I like my doc, but I feel he's wrong on this one.

I would suggest going to an Endocrinologist. S/he should be able to answer questions better than a normal Dr. as well as diagnose any problems you should have. Before I was diagnosed with a thyroid problem (Hashimoto's disease) I had a TSH level around the same. My doc said not to worry, that was 10 years ago. My endo said if I would have come to him 10 yrs ago, the problems I had and am having now would never had occurred. 5.3 might be normal but go to an endo, they know what they are talking about and might ease you mind a bit more.

I think he's wrong too. Euthyroid is supposed to be less than 2. He might be going with the old standards. Look up some recent documentation about TSH and show them to him.

Did he do any other tests such as the FT4 and FT3? If not, ask for these, too. As the other answer said, there are newer guidelines, but many labs don't use them. I have a doctor who goes by these other lab tests, basal body temp, and symptoms. If your doctor won't consider anything different, you might consider finding another doctor.
