The Taurus didn't replace anything in 1986, it was a whole new line of front wheel drive sedans , they still continued to make LTD's with rear wheel drive until 1991 :)

The Taurus replaced the Ford Granada and Fairmont as their mid-sized sedan. The Taurus was a giant leap forward as it was much more space-efficient, aerodynamic and utilized front-wheel drive instead of rear-wheel drive like the Granada and Fairmont. It was also the best selling car in America for a number of years...

The Granada was replaced by the Taurus, which ended production in Oct/Nov 2006. The Fusion did replace the Taurus (NOT the Five Hundred). The Five Hundred is actually larger than the Taurus especially in luggage capacity with 108.3 cubic feet of passenger volume and 21.2 cu. ft of luggage capacity.

The Fusion has 100 cu. ft of passenger volume and 15.8 cu ft of luggage capacity (although it is more useable than the Taurus due to hinge design). The Taurus had 104.4 cu ft of passenger volume and 17.0 cu. ft of luggage capacity. The measurements on head, hip, shoulder, and leg room are nearly identical to the fusion, within a few tenths of an inch. areas where the Taurus has more space are front head room (1.3" due to higher seat placement in Fusion for visibility) and rear hip (2.3") and leg room (1.9").

It makes a huge distinction which engine it has. the three.0 Vulcan's have been lifeless solid. the pinnacle gasket failure grow to be constrained to easily the three.8, simply by fact it had aluminum heads on an iron block, and head gasket technologies grow to be in simple terms so solid. If the cylinder heads cracked or warped, it truly is simply by fact the engine grow to be operated at excessively intense temperature for too long, yet otherwise, the heads won't fail. i think greater recent head gaskets are accessible that final longer. the three.2 DOHC SHO engine grow to be super, yet which would be costly to restoration. Icontinual an '89 Taurus LX and revel in it very lots; it at the instant has over 203k miles. The transmission grow to be rebuilt at 165k miles, simply by fact there grow to be a spring interior that snapped thoroughly in 0.5, and allowed hydraulic tension to go have been it wasn't meant to, which manifested as a caught throttle. while it grow to be rebuilt, the guy on the save instructed me the band and seize packs have been wiped out, yet there hasn't been any catastrophic disaster: my transmission has held up positive. One little bit of advice: make beneficial all vacuum lines are actually not cracked. I had a tee on suitable of my carbon canister that grow to be cracked in 0.5, and the vacuum leak led to a sensation as though the engine grow to be misfiring and upshifting way too early from OD to third. Small vacuum leaks could have you ever chasing after enormous issues while they are truly low priced to restoration.
