Lexapro is called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (commonly known as SSRIs) and Effexor is it is known as an SNRI, or serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. Serotonin and norepinephrine are neurotransmitters used throughout the brain. The "biochemical theory" of depression and generalized anxiety disorder states that low levels of these neurotransmitters lead to the particular disorder. They are not the exact same medications, even though they are both prescribed for the same thing. Both of these medications are used to treat depression and generalized anxiety disorder.

Side effects for both include: a possible initial increase in suicidal thoughts, nausea, insomnia, somnolence, increased sweating, fatigue, and my three favorites - problems with ejaculation, decreased libido, and anorgasmia (might be the reason for the increase in suicidal thoughts). In addition, Effexor sometimes causes a rise in blood pressure, so if you have high blood pressure, it might get worse.

Hope this helps...
