The Windows Task Manager shows that the CPU of my computer was almost 100% used. But I only had one or two programs running. Were there any programs running in the background and not showing in the Windows Task Manager's screen and so I was not aware of? If it was, how I could close them down?

Start by defragging. Then, buy more RAM - these days a minimum of 512K is necessary just to run basic programs, and it's not that expensive. If you get another 512K, you should notice some improvement. It's easy to install. I would not rely on virtual memory to improve your situation. Call up a reputable retail and give them the model and brand of your pc. They should be able to link you up to precisely what you need.

How to make your computer faster
A clean computer is key to a faster computer. Run the 3 scans below.

Update and run your Anti-Virus program. Don't have one? You can run a free online scan from Trendmicro. When I have tested it it takes some time to run it but it may be time well spent if it can fix any problems.

Download and run http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Download, update and run Spybot---http://www.safer-networking.org/ . Don't forget to use the Immunize feature.

Download, update and run Adaware---http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/products/select_your_product.php

Now lets clean up your registry.

Download RegScrubXP--http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?d...

Safely cleans junk out of the Windows 2000/XP system registry. All changes made to the registry are fully restorable to it's original condition. You can make an exclusion list of registry entries that RegScrubXP will not display as problems. You can sift through a list of file extensions, company names, run upon startup programs, Internet Explorer history, and uninstall programs to delete what you think is junk.

Download CleanUp---http://www.stevengould.org/software/clea...

Free disk space, make your computer run better/faster and protect your privacy - all in one easy solution. All for free!

Now lets clean up your disk.

Do a Disk Cleanup and Disk Defrag. You can find both of them by following the path below.

Start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Cleanup. Let it do its thing. You can check every box that has something to delete.

Now follow the same path and do a Disk Defrag. Again just let it do its thing.

Now lets tweak your connection.

There are many programs out there to do this. I will give you 2 of them.

The first one is TCP Optimizer.

Description: The TCP Optimizer is a free, easy Windows program that provides an intuitive interface for tuning and optimizing your Internet connection. There is no installation required, just download and run.

You can get support for the best way to set it up right from their forum http://forums.speedguide.net/

The second one is Cablenut.

Windows XP tested and approved

CableNut is a tool for optimizing your Internet Connection. We have provided a way to tweak any option you may want to in the adjuster. You can load "CableNut Custom Setting" files that are included with the program to tweak your Internet connection.

Again support is available right from their forum.http://www.broadbandnuts.com/index.php?p...

deselect all of the programs that arent necessary @ startup

(goto Start-Run-then type msconfig and select startup tab

then download and install ccleaner (crap cleaner)

as far as the Virtual Memory - dont let XP do it for you

figure out how much RAM you have and multyiply by 2.5 - then use that static number in both fields.

then run a disk defragment from a 3rd party software (not XP)

before doing this run a thorough virus scan and malware scan

Ad-Aware and AVG are free and excellent quality.

Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html

open Task Manager and go to Process Tab
Right click on each Process and select END PROCESS TREE.
some important processes needed for windows wont end, and u dont need to end them., clear all other.

make sure ur disk is not full especially C drice, if its full or near full uninstall some unwanted or less wanted software and remove unwanted data from My Documnet / Desktop. or move it to some other drives.
also install any good Anti Spyware and Anti-Virus, like Norton, Trend Micro etc.

maybe you should get progrems like adaware and others to check and delete adwares/spywares/anything else. (each get different adwares/spywares/anything so get more than 1 progrem and do a check at least once a week, more is better)
maybe when you clicked something it automatically installed something that you dont know about and maybe you have lots of that stuff and that slow the computer. do you click lots of stuff you dont know what they are? if you do, DONT!
go to the uninstall list and uninstall everything you dont know but not things that are important of course.
there is more to check that maybe you should not touch if you dont know what you are doing like registry, it can mess your computer so if you know someone who know what he is doing ask him for help.

your drive with the system files (probably c) need to have some freespace, give it at least 1gb.

BUT of course i can be wrong and maybe its something else, maybe its better im wrong.
