When a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, does it make a sound? I want to say yes and no. The tree makes a potential sound, but the sound is not actualized until someone hears it.
Sound is technically the translation of vibrations. A tree would only make a vibration, it isn't until those vibrations are detected in the ear canal and transmitted via the eardrum and ossicles to nerves in the inner ear that convert those vibrations into the "noise" in your brain.
Without the world, there are no perceptions, and without the ability to percieve, phenomenon are not part of the world. We are at present not able to sense certain wavelengths of light, they exist as merely potentially perceivable. Supposing that one day we can sense ultraviolet light then this perception would be actualized and we would be able to see other colors.

Scientifically speaking, no.

In falling, the tree would disturb the air surrounding it and create vibrations in that air. When those vibrations reached our eardrums, our eardrums would receive the vibrations, and in turn vibrate in response to being hit with the moving air. This movement of our eardrums would be percieved by our brain and translated into sound. But if our ears aren't around to recieve the vibrations, the vibrations would never be translated into actual "sound"; they would remain as mere airwaves.

But who actually understands that?

So, for conformity's sake, yes; the falling tree would indeed make a sound.

Hey good thing I came along. The answer is NO. See if you can follow me on this. Sound is energy. For energy to be measured or registered (as sound for example), there has to be a receptor (ears in this case) and something to translate it (your brain, r we following so far?). If neither of these r present, then the energy is transformed into some other form of energy and since there was nothing to register it, it DIDN'T make a sound. Whew! Hope I made sense.

If a tree falls down in the middle of a forest...
...do the other trees laugh at it?

Sound is based on the movement of air against the timpani membrane of an ear. If an ear or recording source is not around, then no sound was created.

At least that's what they told me in physics class.

We all heard this one a long time ago ... you just hearing it for the first time? So what do ya think ... does it or doesn't it?

Do you believe that there is silence if there isn't anyone there to listen to the sound? I don't think so! There's always a sound ... there just isn't always someone there to hear it!
