Pebbles will go days without making a noise. Then out of no where she will make loud screaming noises mix with a few normal sounding "chirps." She will also flap her wings like she is flying in the cage...I don't know what in the world she is doing because if she wants to fly her cage door is always open when I'm home. I also give her treats and lots of toys but I'm wondering if any other cockatiels seem perfectly content living in their cage? I know this seems like a lot of questions!
NOTE: I have only had pebbles for about 4 months. Her previous owner was elderly and passed away. I'm not sure of Pebbles age. She will hiss and not let anyone touch her.

First thing Pebbles is normal. Cockatiels get spooked by the slightest things and that can send them off in a screaming fit. She is probably still adjusting to her new environment, you will see her improve as she gets more comfortable around your house.
As for her being in her cage all the time, she sees it as her nest. So that is where she feels secure and safe. If you would like her to be more of a hands on pet, you can work with her a little everyday about coming out of the cage and perching on a stick or your finger (if you are brave enough) However, you know the saying... "You can't teach a dog new tricks"... also works for birds.
Just be patient with her, the longer she is with you the more you will become family to her. She will learn to trust you and hopefully become more friendly.

Sometimes putting a mirror in his cage will help. Does he scream at night? If so, put a blanket over his cage and he will calm own. Use a tape recorder to tape his own sounds and then play that when you can't be around him. Put a TV somewhere he can see the screen. Buy another bird to put with him so he isn't lonely. Pets can sometimes be demanding. Some are worse than others. I had a guinea pig once. These little creatures are wonderful if you have time for them. They love to be held and petted. Yet, if you don't have the time the make noises similar to a pig's squeal. My guinea pig was fine until he got older. Then he was on a scheduled feeding time. If I missed the time he would let me know he was hungry. Some pets are just more demanding than others. There may not be an easy solution. Good luck. p.s. I would definately try the mirror first and the TV.

Well, I know of a reason. Birds do that sometimes. I have had Doves, parakeets, and cockatiels. And sometimes, for no reason, they would scream at me. I got them more toys, I checked their water and food, i took them to the vet, i did everything i could think of and they continued to do it. With her flapping her wings in the cage, it sounds like she is in need of some deffinate holding and being talked to. My cockatiel(Aspen) did that whenever he wanted attention. Your bird just had a big loss, she is mourning, and extremely lonely. She wants to make sure you will be there for her. She doesn't want treats and toys, she wants you right now. Your finger, your shoulder, and she deffinately does not want anyone else. Also the hissing and the antisocialness confirms, to me, that she is deffinately depressed. Make sure you pay attention to her appetite. I think you should give her more one on one time. Hold her alot. They looooooove attention. It would also help her to heal, and build an unconditional friendship with you. My bird loved to fly on my shoulder and i would rub his head with my cheek, and he just loved it.

Sounds like my mother-in-laws cockatiel, Elvis. He'll sit on his perch near the door when I go over there and screech , lean forward and flap his wings. He's happy to see me. Sometimes, he'll have his back to me and look under the perch at me. He likes to play games. He doesn't like to be touched much.

My cockatiel used to do that. He did it for attention or just to be "crazy" like you would skip and hop for fun!! Even though he would bite if I put my hand in his cage, with persistence he would come onto my hand. They act like they don't need you but in fact they do love you and crave attention as much as or more than a human.

she is vocalizing and its normal. She is asserting her power over her space. She may have had to make that type of noise to get her previous owners attention.
