I've been reading several articles and all say the same thing: China is taking great strides in upgrading their military particularly their air force and navy but also shrinking down their army and going for a smaller more mobile better equipped ground force. I also have heard that they are using the war on terror as a lessons learned case study. I think the big difference between Russia and China is that China's budget is sitting on a rock solid economic foundation. Will China surpass the USA?

China will not surpass the US militarial wise; noone will. China has MORE people in their Army, and thats about all they have. They are poorly trained, w/ tech from the Soviets and some guns from the Clinton administration.

To start this; obviously nuclear power is something the US has that China doesnt. China has Nukes but not anything like the US. The US has around 13,000 and China has about 135. The US is very well trained, w/ the best tech in the world, and have a VERY high militarial budget. (If you add up every other country in the worlds military budget, they dont add up to the US's alone. Which is quite amazing).

While the Chineese and American forces on ground would be a good fight; the US would dominate the air and sea. The Chineese have ships/subs from the Soviets and a very small Air Force. The US has the best Navy in the World and its Air Force is a hell of alot better than China's.

In an all out war, China would loose. For the following reasons:
-The US has a lot higher militarial budget, that China lacks.
-The US have an impressive Air Force, Navy, and tech that China lacks.
-China has virtually VERY little transportation units to move their Military around; so even though they have a 3 million man Army, they couldnt get 10,000 to America before we retaliate w/ all the fire power that we have RIGHT NOW in the Sea of Japan.
-The US has allies in China's region that we could put troops in and fall back to if we needed to, and have the necessary transportation.
-In a Nuclear War, if both countries were to engage in Nuclear Warfare, China would kill alot of Americans no doubt. But the only missle defense system America has is on our West Coast and thats where the Chineese Missles would have to go through. While the US can hit China from the West, South, and East. And at the same time, all of China's billion people live on one half of the country. (due to the geography of China) So if we shot off lets say, 200 Nuclear Warheads at China. If we aimed them at their 200 most populated cities. China would loose at least 2/3s of its population. And we could do that all within a half hour tops.

In an all out war, America would have severe casualties, but would kick @ss none the less.

China does have each and every thing the U. S. has yet no longer airplane distributors and to all the replies for this question: gosh you adult men are like so immature even in all possibility a third grader could be attentive to that if China replaced into to combat with the U. S. then it could actually be WWIII as China will draw Russia and the U. S. will draw the ecu and NATO into the conflict. Then, it could ultimately ensue that China, Russia, the U. S., the united kingdom, France, and Germany launch their nuclear junk and then we'd have a nuclear wintry climate and everybody could die so close THE **** UP YOU ALL collectively with YOU CHUNG if we had a conflict the time this answer is published you all could be lifeless in like 10 hours from now.

China has a very large population base.

The trouble they have is allowing their military commanders the freedom necessary to win a conflict without HUGE losses in personnel and equipment.

1.3 billion people live in China
2.25 million people are in the armed forces (13.25 million if everyone is activated for service at once.)

They are making big strides economically and militarily to achieve status as a world superpower.

They have some serious things to overcome first before they go on to becoming a world super power. Primarily it has very poor relations with other superpowers, and its military is woefully inadequate to stand up to anything right now. Unemployment is still a big factor and of course they still want unification with Taiwan, which objects to that by the way.

They have a tough tie ahead of them, and their notion of "National Advancement at all costs" will result in deteriorating conditions at the home front. I wish them luck actually.

Surpass the USA?

Nope, we enjoy a severe technological advantage as well as having one of the finest military forces in the world. China has no 'Blue Water Navy" to speak of and nothing capable of projecting their influence outside of their nation by air either. That leaves their army and it is unable to move outside of the borders of their own nation at all. Therefore the Chinese Army is landlocked and available only for a fight on Chinese soil (or against Taiwan) unless they invade someone or get invaded directly.... a large army is rather worthless as a political instrument.

Surpass the US? hmmmmm, I'm still not convinced, but for anyone thinking they pose no threat at all, tell to the Sailors on the USS Kitty Hawk.

MORE PEOPLE EQUAL MORE MOUTHS TO FEED, LETS SEEM THEM STRETCH THAT SUPPLY LINE ACROSS THE OCEAN. THEY WON'T EVEN BE ABLE TO FEED THEIR POPULATION LET ALONE THEIR ARMY IN A FIGHT WITH THE USA. Not to mention if you bomb a couple of key damns in their country would be sent into chaos, China's military will never be what we have. They had to steal nuclear technology just to build a bomb that we made decades ago!

No, they will never. They have more people in their military, but their training is worse.
