Most cats have a digestive mechanism in thier body which allowes them to pass fur that they ingest while grooming.

However a seemingly large percentage of cats lack this mechanism (it is a genetic defect), and cannot pass the fur.

To help releive this problem, you can buy hairball remedies from your vet, and brush your cat frequently to remove excess loose fur.

When your cat cleans itself, it swallows it's fur. The cat's stomach can't break down all that fur and digest it, so the cat throws it back up. You can go to the pet store and buy hairball remedy or use Vaseline. Just stick a little bit of it on your finger and he'll lick it off. Or you can put it on his paw. Some cats don't like the taste of Vaseline, so buying the hairball remedy is better because it's beef or poultry flavored. Plus, brushing the cat on a regular basis greatly helps.

It's because the cat licks its fur and it winds up going into the belly where it cannot be expelled. My cat does this and somehow it looks like she has coughed up a cigar. She is healthy otherwise.

because if hes a persian or long hair cat he will do it often because he has loads of fur in his body so when he cleans his body the shedded fur on his body will stick in his tongue and he will vomit it out because he can't digest it

Brush your cat's hair often so u can take the shedded hair

Good Luck

i've got in no way had a cat cough them out - throw them up is greater like it. unquestionably, cats greater usually have the issue of no longer with the ability to do away with all the hair extremely than coughing it up consistently.

as you know its called a "haiball" when it licks itself, the fur stuck in its mouth forms a ball. and you know how you find hair in you mouth very annoying, well the cats spit it out.

I think :)

It's perfectly normal behavior, however, if it is happening more than once a week or so, I would call your vet. Your cat shouldn't be hacking up hairballs all that often.

Because he licks his fur -- when it forms a ball (usually elongated), he expels it.
