It is important to discourage biting, even if it is not hurting you. You never know when it will turn into a more serious bite and then your pup could get into trouble! You could get sued, or worse a judge could order him to be euthanized if he is deemed dangerous!

Nipping at you or other humans is an unacceptable way to ask someone to play. My own dog thought that nipping at me was a good way to get my attention. I taught him that it was not a good way to get my attention by putting him in time out EVERY SINGLE TIME! It kind of sucked for a couple weeks, because sometimes I wanted to play too, but I knew it was much more important that he learn not to bite. I encouraged him to bring me a toy if he wanted to play, and he still does that.

Don't allow your dog to bite, no matter for what reason.
Dogs can and will learn good playing behavior if you insist on it.
Puppies often play with humans like they play with other puppies, and that includes play biting, but our skin is more vulnerable than theirs, and you should not put up with it.
I train my dogs by immediately stopping the play by saying "NO!" in a loud voice when they put their teeth into the play and remove my hands. They must learn that being touched is a privilege not to be abused. I do this without exception, and pretty soon they get the picture.
I then resume playing with them until they bite again, and repeat.
I've done this with other people's dogs who weren't trained that way and within minutes had a dog I could play with that wouldn't bite me.

If the biting hurts you need to teach him to stop. My dog will play bite and knows how to bite without hurting anyone, so its okay if he just does that

If a dog is trying to be mean, it will show its teeth and lean its head forward. Otherwise, it is playing.

If he draws blood I would say he is being mean! Usually if he is wagging his tail he is playing.

it is best not to let them do this even in play. it can lead to misunderstanding and some one getting hurt.

if he is just nipping, and it doesn't hurt, then he is playing. I have a puggle, and he does this a lot, he is just playing!
