Sometimes he will just start doing this for no reason...why? Also when they squak over and over...what they are doing? Are they happy, mad? sad?

Just trying to streach!

Let that boy out, and let em' fly around, or if his wigs are clipped let him out anyways! Birds NEED to have exersize.

If he sqwaks mabe he loves you and wants your attention!

He may be just exercising/stretching,or maybe trying to loosen some feathers when flapping his wings. Squawking is usually a sign that birds want attention, food/water/bored. Its their way of showing their displeasure! Check to see your bird has all he needs. Fresh water/food. If feeding seed, remember to blow the shucks off at least three times a day,and top up where necessary.Change water frequently. Alternate toy's, so to reduce the risk of boredom. You can also leave a radio on low, which gives them the impression someone is around. As Parakeets are social birds,talk/interact with your bird often. If squawking is persistent, try darkening the room and place a cover over cage.

Hi,

It is natural for a bird too do this when they need excersise, It sounds like he isnt getting enough out of cage time to be able to come out and fly around so there for he is having to do it in his cage,

Birds have muscles in their wings that they need to excersise try having it out a bit more, also with the squak, put the flapping of wings and squak together and it sounds like he isnt getting enough attention, thats why hes squaking.

Having him out alot more than what you do will help i should imagen!

A parakeet has a wing span much larger than his body. He's forced to keep them tight against him in his cage. There's nothing wrong. If you could let him out for awhile to fly around the room, that would be great exercise for him. Also, if I were to see a parakeet coming at me squawking over and over, I would assume they are mad and take cover. I don't know if they have the capacity to be happy or sad. I think that they would be more or less content or not with their environment.

Birds, by their very birthright, spend many hours a day flying while in the wild. It is their very instinct---therefore they need a lot of exercise in captivity, especially, if they are in a cage that is too small. If they can't fly around some, they will flap their wings like that just for the exercise!!! As for the sounds, you will be able to tell after a while, if he is happy, sad, or just trying to get your attention, by the sound. Don't worry, they are very exuberant little guys, and like to express it in a loud voice sometimes...

They might be streching, have cramps. I had a bird that would do this especially if I quickly slapped my knees or play Whole Lotta Love by Led Zepplin. The bird would flap so quickly, she would accidently start flying.
