We recently adopted a ten-month-old cat from the SPCA last Thursday, and we were planning to get two -- it was all going great. The cat would let us cuddle with him, sit on our lap, etc. When we got the second one yesterday from the same place (SPCA), the loving stopped. They get along relatively fine -- they tolerate each other, but I can't help but feel sad because everytime I try to cuddle up with the former original cat (they're 6 months apart) he doesn't act the same...he doesn't let me hold and hug him for long periods of time, hold his paws, cuddle, etc. Will he ever "go back to normal"?

He could be jealous that you let another kitty in and is afraid that you love the other one more than him, so he's probably saying "go play with your other new best friend." Try to show that they are both equal, and give it a few days. Good luck and Happy New Year!

Since you say that the two are getting along very well, I'm assuming that it may be because the first cat has found a new form of love, whereas the love that you originally gave him was his only source of affection. Now that he has a creature of his species around that he also gets along with, he has probably developed a preference for the warmth and cuddliness from that other cat. Or Maybe he has just enough love from the other cat or maybe he is getting too much affection altogether from the both of you (cats enjoy personal space and time alone a lot of times).

its normal for the first pet to act jealous when a new pet is brought home. It's the same whether it's a dog or cat. You must establish to the new cat that the older cat is the dominate one. It's like a pcak of dogs-there is always an alpha male dog that the rest follow. your older kitty is probably really confused right now-show it love first and feed it first before the newer one. things will settle down after a while and when it's comfortable being the alpha cat.

The cat will probably go back to being loving and cuddling eventually but it will take time. I have a 2 year old calico who won't leave me alone. She always wants love and affection and she cuddles with me on the couch and sleeps with me. Then I brought in an 18 year old female cat from someone who couldn't keep her anymore. The calico was terribly mad at me. It took 3 months for the young one to get back to her normal loving self. She still doesn't like the gramma kitty much but at least she still loves me like she used to. Be patient. Cats are so "weird" when it comes to other cats. They become territorial and it takes time for them to adjust.

I have two cats. The second one we got when our first cat was 7 years old. That was 2 years ago and they still don't get along too well. The first cat, like the rest of your answers, still won't lay in my lap too long.
Good Luck!

Yes, he will. He is just a little mad and worried. He thinks he is being replaced. He also has to share you with this other cat. I would say if he doesn't get over it in a week or two take him to the vet there may be some thing medically wrong.

Hard to say. Cats are weird like that. When we got our second cat, our first cat would hardly allow us to touch her, forget holding her. Now, she is quite loving, but still frowns on being held. I chalk it up to her being a cat, as they are the strangest creatures on earth.

its jealousy, i have two dogs, but the other dog hates the other cause i spend more time on the other dog then itself, so it starts to feel unloved. so its mostly jealousy
