Hi. My sister gave me a really cool sushi serving set for Christmas, and so now I want to make it myself. I'm wondering if anyone has any personal tips or other advice. I've looked at many web sites, but I'm looking for some personal tips and/or recipes.

I should clarify that I know how to make the actual sushi--the rice portion. I have a great recipe for it, in fact. I'm looking for tips in terms of rolling up the ingredients and also some ideas of interesting ingredients to use.

Oh, making sushi is so much fun. I use those pre-cooked crab sticks or w.e that you can get at shoprite and avocados.

Sushi making is a lot of fun and not really messy but you really want them to pack them tightly or their gonna fall apart. (trust me) Oh and you might wanna buy sushi soy sauce that is specifically for sushi but regular soy sauce taste good too.

I would suggest you take the time to cook the rice like they suggest...I tried taking shortcuts and the rice came out really gooey and starchy. I decided its much easier to just go out for sushi. Maybe with practice it gets much easier but personally I will not bother trying it myself again. And I am a pretty good cook otherwise...rice is pretty unforgiving though.

I like hot dog with mayonise....
when you cutting the sushi with knife,,make sure you wipe the knife or dip the knife in hot water after every cut...
this is to make sure there is no rice on the surface of he knife.....
if there are some rice on the knife...the sticky rice will give you some problem when you cut the sushi...

rice vinegar mixed with white sugar added to your cooked rice will help it stick together.
you need to get one of those little bamboo mats for rolling your sushi up with - cover this mat with plastic wrap

rice on mat 1/2 in. thick
1 sheet nori(seaweed)
lightly spread mayo
slice avocado
shredded crab meat (imitation will do)
cucumber stick
touch of wasabi
roll up
sprinkle with roasted sesame seeds
serve with pickled ginger, wasabi and good soy sauce (Kikkoman)

I used the sushi recipe from allrecipes.com. I used lots of different fillers like crab, avocados. Use what you like.
