I really don't like medication, but I keep a bottle of xanax on hand(prescribed by doctor) for emergencies. I average two pills a month(when running errands or shopping), and often skip months if I'm not too anxious. The pills are 0.5mg which is a very low dosage, that I take on an as needed basis.
Anyway, I had to take care of some important business today, and I was really nervous, so I took one and a half pills and noticed that my throat felt really dry, and it made me sound hoarse, or a little congested. Is this normal? If so why? This is why I don't like meds, they all have some type of side effects, and I'm extremely sensitive to the slightest thing.

Side effects can vary so much from person to person. I've noticed a similar thing with Xanax once in a while, but it usually goes away again pretty quickly. If it stays around, you're probably coming down with a cold, unfortunately!

Strain If you feel uncomfortable, baby or not, you should stop. If you need rest, rest. Often women sing even better after their babies are born. We need a period of recuperation, for sure, but often our voices are warmer, fuller, and more relaxed. And, we sparkle! Love for our husbands comes out in our sound! Take heart! It is possible that you are sporting a low-grade infection of some sort? Try to take it easy. If you don't have the time for that, make the time for it! Instead of working on your grade 6 which might put a strain on your nerves, why don't you just sing to the baby? Babies love to be sung to! Lullyabys are soft, so there is no chance of straining or feeling that you must push or make a 'professional' sound. In fact, the baby will tell you if you sing wrong. They are the best critics. Have you a copy of the Brahms "Wiegendlied" ...the cradlesong? "Lullabye and good night....." and you might like to learn it in German. The words are lovely. Hope you feel better. Have some rosehip tea. It's full of vitamin C. If that does not work, have some chicken soup!!! You probably need the nourishment. xxxxx

yes that is a side effect for some people. Every med will effect everyone a little differently. The side effects that are listed with meds are the most generic, commonly found but not ALL side effects that could occur. I have the same issue with xanax as well as muscle relaxers.
I suggest you try a natural herb or vitamin. I have recently switched from mainstream meds to simple herbs/vitamins and I feel GREAT, never sick, always sleep well and feel energized.

0.5 mg of Xanax is NOT a very low dose. It is an average dose and if you take 1 1/2 of these pills you are actually taking quite a lot. Dry mouth can occur. Please talk to your doctor if you really need this amount of Xanax.

Dry mouth is among the "normal" side effects of Xanax, though the hoarse throat and "chest congestion" might actually be indicative of a "reaction" to the medication. You should contact your doctor as soon as possible to see about having a different medicine prescribed.

#1. Talk to a doctor about it. Do you want to risk a potentially stupid/dangerous answer by a stranger on here!?
#2. If one pill is your dose, why are you taking 1.5? Most medication doesn't work like that. There is an effective dose which works as good as can without problems.
