We took the battery out to get behind the headlight to replace the headlight bulb. Now the dealer says to bring it in( 1 hour away) so they can take the radio out and get the 4 digit code that is on the radio

It's different for every radio. There's not just one master code that will work. It should have been given to you when you purchased the car and they told you to put it somewhere not in the car for anti-theft. If you don't have it then yes you will have to go to the dealer and they'll crossreference the serial number with their database to get the code.

check your owners manual for a card that says anti-theft radio identification card it will have the code on it.
