In the wild they tend to get eaten by bacteria and also by other animals... this allows them to remain a part of the food chain and, as they call it in Disneyland, the circle of life.
When the animals are pets, however, they're generally buried. Unless they're fish, who get flushed and wind up in septic tanks and sewers.
