I used to live in colombia where if you live a window open just one night by accident, thieves are going to break in (it happened to me) so I developed an OCD and everytime I go out it takes me like 5 minutes to be sure that the door is closed or that the stove is off. In fact, sometimes I even forced the lock until it hurts my hand so I can walk away and look a the wound as a proof that the door is locked. I recently moved to Canada which is a super safe country and I thought that over here the OCD would go away because there is no fear to sustent the obssesion yet I still have it and I was thinking about taking medication but I wanna know if they actually work and if you can tell the difference from the time when you weren't talking them. Thanks a lot.

OCD is a biological disorder and not developed through psychological trauma to my knowledge. Did a PDoc diagnose you as having OCD? If so, I would suggest seeing another one for a different opinion. It sounds to me as if you are more likely experiencing a developed phobia as a result of a psychologically stressful event. OCD is often treated with Luvox, an SSRI very effectively for many people. I would caution you not to assume that it is OCD merely because you have a fear of a recurring break in. I would suggest seeing a reputable PDoc and asking their opinion about cognitive therapy and perhaps a temporary prescription for tranquillizers like Xanax or Ativan. Are your symptoms only experienced when you readying yourself to leave your home? OCD symptoms usually do not appear only at certain times and triggered by specific events. They are almost always irrational and consist of obsessions and ritual behavior. Your checking the door for security purposes is not irrational based on your previous experience, but rather only neurotic. Get another opinion!

So far there is no effective drug therapy. You could try conventional therapy which works for a few. Currently the use of shrooms are being tested for OCD. So far the results are amazing, but being able to take these legally for OCD is yeeears down the road. Good luck. Have you tried meditating?

There is meds for OCD. Get in contact with a psychiatrist. Therapy also helps. Therapy will help you learn how to handle the OCD.

Yes, they actually work. They work by increasing serotonin in the brain which in turn stops the obsessive thoughts. Anafranil, Prozac and Zoloft are all approved to treat OCD.

I think that last answer was WRITTEN 'on shrooms.' Anyhow, yes there is effective treatment, both behavioral and medicated. Maybe I'll be back on later with details I'm going to enjoy me some soup now.

FIRST OFF, DO YOU REALLY HAVE OCD?? YOU CAN'T CAUSE YOURSELF TO HAVE IT, IT IS A DISEASE THAT ONCE YOU ARE DIAGNOSED WITH IT, IT NEVER GOES AWAY, IT GOES THROUGH SPELLS OF NOT BOTHERING YOU AND SPELLS OF DRIVING YOU COMPLETLEY INSANE, MY EXPERIENCE OF BEING DIAGNOSED WITH IT FOR 18 YEARS NOW. MEDICATIN DOES HELP. BUT IT DOESN'T CURE IT, IT IS NOT CURABLE. DID A DOCTOR DIAGNOSE YOU WITH THE DISORDER OR IS IT THAT YOU ARE JUST PARANOIND, OCD COMES IN DIFFERENT FORMS AND NOT JUST THAT AND TAKES SPELLS, IT SOUNDS TO ME YOU ARE JUST OVER WORRIED UNLESS YOU HAVE JUST CONTRADICTED THE DISORDER, YOU REALLY NEED TO DO SOME RESEARCH ON OCD THOUGH.

I'm not quite sure, for I've never tried any. However, I've been informed that they do provide relief, but some people will react badly to them.

Best of luck!
