Hi All,

I know this has probably been addressed before, but since I'm new to this site...
We're thinking of having a very simple, but beautiful ceremony on an island and just wanted some opinions. It seems as if this would be less expensive than a NYC wedding. Is this true?
Aside from Sandals, would anyone know of any nice wedding resorts in the Caribbean?
This would be my first time off the US mainland. Which island would be best for a spring wedding?

Thanks!!

I heard sandals is the best.
I can tell you don't go to the Dominican, it's filthy dirty and horrible there. Look for anyone who is eco friendly and you'll have a nice clean trip.
Just keep in mind, that's lots of friends and family will not be able to attend due to cost and using vacation/personal time.

I agree with pink...

Destination weddings CAN be cheaper, but it depends on your taste, the location and many other factors. Don't forget to add up the costs of calling and corresponding (not everything can be done in email) with someone in another country. Also, if you and your fiance do not have passports, add this up as well. Travel costs also should include trip insurance, etc.

I have heard mixed things about Sandals. I would suggest going to a hotel rating site or Expedia to form your own opinions. Some places are cheaper than others (such as Mexico), and some more expensive (think St. Lucia). Also, believe it or not, a lot of those resorts do NOT have the capability of doing a wedding on the beach, despite what the pictures show you. So, if you want a beach wedding, be sure to ask about the site for the vow exchange if this is really important to you.

Congrats.

Sandals is nice, but VERY expensive. Your budget should determine the destination. You can have a nice wedding in the DR, Playa Del Carmen, Cancun, Cozumel, etc. What do you want from a destination wedding? The nicer the hotel, the costlier the wedding. You could even get married on a cruise ship in the Caribbean. Do you want a lot of people to attend? Can people afford a $5000 trip (Sandals). My friend got married in Playa Del Carmen and the hotel/airfare deal she got through a travel agent was only $500 per person for 4 days/nights. You could also get married in Vegas (which is always inexpensive), but at Mandalay Bay which has a sort of Island type atmosphere.

Having a destination wedding in the Caribbean MIGHT be cheaper than a NYC wedding. It depends on a LOT of things. If in NYC, would your wedding be formal, semi formal, or informal? If in NYC, would it be big or small? Are you a good negotiator and willing to argue your prices down? If in the Caribbean, would you pay for your guests to come? How many of them? How elaborate of a wedding package would you want?

I looked into destination weddings in the Caribbean, and decided against it for my own reasons. But while searching, Sandals were the only resorts that I would have gone with. If you were going for Mexico, I'd say the Secrets or Dreams resorts, though.

There are two places that I would reccomend: The British Virgin Islands or the United States Virgin Islands.

In US Virgin Islands, the Wyndham Surgar Bay Resort on the Island of St.Thomas is absolutely georgeous.I went to a wedding there and the rooms used for the wedding and reception were perfect. All you have to do is contact them and let the coordinator handle it all.

In the British Virgin Islands, you can have your wedding at the Little Dix Bay Resort on Virgin Gorda or Lambert Beach Resort on Tortola. Both of these places are excellent for weddings and the views there are beautiful. There is a place on Tortola that is very low key and a little secluded. It is called Carrie's Island Comfort Inn. It has a georgeous view of the the neighbouring beach and it is 3 minutes by car. I reccomend it for honey mooner especially. Its really quiet and romantic.

Good Luck and Congratulations!!
