Return the puppy, and don't buy another one from a "store". Puppy Mills are where they come from and they are notoriously riddled with health problems that can cost you a lot in vet bills.

Explain to your son that the puppy is sick and then I would consider taking your child to the pound to pick out a healthy puppy (the shelter won't knowingly sell you a sick dog like a pet store will). Maybe doing this right away will ease his pain of having to part with the puppy. But if you choose to keep the pup, and it ends up extremely ill in a year, to the degree it has to be put down, that's going to be a lot harder to deal with and explain after a longer period.

Sometimes there are terms from the stores that you cannot return puppies. Just take the dog to the vet and they will prescribe you an antibiotic for the cough. I also got myself a four month old puppy two months ago and he got sick within a week living with us and wouldn't stop sneezing and that's when I took him to the vet. As for you not wanting the puppy I feel you will hurt your son a bit too much. Should have thought about that before bying it. It is a commitment raising a puppy.

If you bought this pup from a pet store and it is sick already I would take it back, however I am not sure this is possible. Your son may be attached to this pup but considering it is already sick just think of the health problems it will have in the future and being from a pet store it will likely have lots of problems. I think it will be harder on him the longer you have the puppy. If it is possible take the pup back and either look for another puppy from a reputable breeder or go rescue one from a shelter or pound. You could take your son with and let him help with the chosing of the new dog maybe that will help.

First of all, you made a commitment when you purchased the puppy. To answer your question, No i do not think you should return to puppy.
I am an avid animal lover and believe that if you chose to take on the responsibility of "owning" an animal, you should continue to own up to that responsibility no matter what.
On the other hand, maybe you should try to contact the seller again because as far as i know, they cannot legally sell you a sick puppy. It sounds like the little puppy may have some type of kennel cough and he needs to see a vet as soon as possible.

Your first major mistake was purchasing from a pet store. That basically means you are asking for issues with the dog. If it has only been a few days, they HAVE to take the dog back. I would do it today, and tell your son you made a major boo-boo and that you will find him a better-quality dog that is healthy and happy. May I suggest a shelter mutt? Your son may cry, but if you keep the dog, YOU will be the one crying once you realize how many veterinarian bills and behavioral issues the dog will eventually have.

I hope you do the right thing and return the dog!

If the puppy is sick, then take it to the vet. Since your son is attached to it, you can't return him. Make the store pay for the vet bills, since they sold you a sick puppy. Good luck, but don't give the puppy away.

If you didn't want the dog you shouldn't have gotten it because even though it was for your son, as the parent you know the animal is ultimately your responsibility. This is a living thing, not a disposable purchase. You should take the pup to a vet and do not buy from a store again. The animals there are merchandise just like you were buying a book off a shelf and they are not properly cared for. It probably has kennel cough.

That is life. Puppies like children get sick. You should not have gotten the dog if you were not prepared to take care of it. There are signs in stores, pounds and the SPCA make sure you want your new pet not only is your son attached to it it is attached to your son. If there is a chance that the puppy will be hurt either return it or take it to the local SPCA where the will care for it and please for your son sake and that of another puppy do not get another dog.

Take the dog to the vet. If you return the dog then the problem will be on someone else's hands or worse the dog can die, so give the puppy a chance at having a life take the puppy to the vet or emergency vet and have them nip it in the bud so to say.

I doubt you can return a pet store puppy for your money back. They are often sick, and many times have behavior issues forever. Often the pet stores get puppies from puppy mills where there is overbreeding of unhealthy dogs with little socialization and premature removal from the mom. Pet store dogs are cute, but they are usually a bad idea.

If you can...yes. Return the puppy, and take a look at a local shelter or www.petfinder.org for a different dog. Either puppy or adult. I have a better time with young or adult dogs with kids. Your son will be sad for a time, but he will grow to love the new one.
