To be human is to be aware. And being aware is to interact with your environment (including those who surround )you in a purposeful way. The key element is concious thought.

Cogito, ergo sum.

i don't think there's a non-scientific way to explain that! for me, what makes humans stand out is our ability to communicate in the way we do, through art, dance, language, music, humour and love, and through all of these combined, our ability to believe, by which i mean, to answer questions which are unanswerable. having said that, there's no way of proving that other species can't do anything similar.

Having a body, soul & spirit.

Walking on earth & having a life. I guess what makes us human is that we are also diverse. No one is the same.

I am weak in flesh but strong in spirit. What makes my flesh weak; environment, lifestyle, natural aging processes maybe. What makes my spirit strong; Faith in God, that I was only meant to be in the flesh a short time.

the more i learn about animals and animal behaviour makes me unable to answer this as i once would
i would have in the past said the ability to love ... but i have seen animals love just as unconditionally as we do
i would have said compassion ... but i have seen animals act with more compassion than most humans
being human is nothing more than being another species .... but every species on earth is amazing in its own unique way

Complex language, the extensive ability to use tools. Other than that not much.

For everyone who wrote "wants and needs" animals also have those.
