I think that many people are enamored by the thought of "soul mates." It just reaffirms the belief that there is one true love for everyone. Most people are searching for the "real deal" ya know? I think we hunger to find it and any affirmation we get that we're on the right path is comforting.

"Meant to be" I believe is a figment of our imaginations, as I don't believe that there is such a thing as a prescripted fate, so to speak. We all want to believe that our relationships will last with the one we love, and we tend to create fantasies to agree with these feelings. Over the years, I was with several women that I thought it was written in the stars that we should be together, but alas, these relationships didn't last, so it isn't just a girl thing.
