I heard that sometimes there is a separate power plant that is built right next to the steel mill for the gas/heat byproducts that would otherwise be wasted. Is this true in the case of US steel mills? I am looking for a list of US steel mills that do this.

I worked in a steel mill for a short time. There was gas recirculation within the plant. Flammable gasses were piped to a cutting area where pigs were rolled to size, heated on the ends with the recycled gas, then the ends cut off.
In blast furnaces, open hearths, rolling mills the work is done in the open so heat is not recaptured.
The mills I worked in were built as far back as the early 1900's. There were no recovery operations to power utilities.
