Hi. I just got a new computer for Christmas... I have everything needed for it, except for a damn phone jack. Well, I do have one, but I'm pretty sure it's un-usuable. So, my question would be, about how much would it cost to have a phone jack put into my room? Thanks.

If you have one in the room... simply hook that one up. The hardest thing to do in a new installation is to pull the wire and it sounds like that has already been done. There are only 3 wires (red, green, and yellow) that matter (and the yellow is not always needed either). Having one installed from scratch will cost you between $50 and $150.. Save the money.. here's what to do.

1) Plug in a phone and see if it works... if not then...you will need a friend, two cell phones, and a flashlight for the rest..

2) Take off the cover of the existing jack and make sure the wires are still connected behind the cover. If not connect them and repeat step 1 if they are connected but dead then...

3) Follow the wires.. if they disappear into your wall look on the other side of the wall.. if you can not find them then find where the phone lines come TO your building .. there is a service box there. Consumers can open the right side of it. Look for disconnected wires.

4) This is not high voltage stuff.. its like holding the ends of a double A battery so don't worry.

5) With a friend listening on that plugged in spare phone and using a cell phone for communication.. touch/connect the pairs of loose wires.. one pair at a time.. green to green and red to red

Eventually your friend will hear static and then a dial tone..

connect them permanently and you just saved $50 to $150

Like Dan said the cheapest route is to look in the Penny saver for retired techs - otherwise if you want the Phone company to do it its $135 for the first one and $70 for each additional (labor only) if you need the actual jack it will be $6

It will cost between $80 and $200 dollars fo the phone company to do it. Look in the PennySaver or local want-ads for a retired technician that still does this for extra money. It will be a lot cheaper.

you dont really need a phone jack their 2 ways to go with dis. u could get a wireless router for a laptop and a desktop. for the desktop u need a usb wireless thing that u put in the usb ports of your computer. but all of it the wireless router and the usb device will cost u a bought 100 120 dollars. but could probley go the cheap way and get a wireless phone jack system. it plugs in to the electrical outlet. so u put one where the phone line is in your house and then you put one in your room or where your computer is and you plug it in the outlet and the phone line in with it and the other end in to the computer and boom you got a phone jack in an outlet,,,,,......
