your cats are probably mostly fascinated with the Christmas tree because it isn't up all the time. Its not part of their everyday life. Cats are routine kind of animals.. well at least mine are. When we bring new things home they have to check them out, its a new object and they have to investigate. Its strange to them why we put up this tree only once a year.
That and outside cats climb and play in trees. Think of the panther who lays in the tree ;) Best advise I can give you to keep them out and not knock it down would be keep a spray bottle of water and spritz them with telling them no or funny enough tell them its yours not theirs and they are to leave it alone. Works with mine except the kitten who loves to bat at the tinsel. I gave her a bundle of her own but am making sure she doesn't eat it.. so far she just carries it around and plays with it.

Well, i can tell you that it is in the cats nature. They are just curious to figure out what it is. My 5 year old cat, Angel does the same thing. Have you ever heard of the phrase Curiousity Killed The Cat? Well i found out when i got her that that is actually a true statement! We just had to keep the cat away from the tree this year, she kept knocking down all the ornaments! Well, good luck with your cats!

Because cats love trees & shiny things. They also love the smell of outside on the tree, & just because its something new you brought home.

My Manx cat likes to lay under the tree and look at the lights. She also likes to knock down the ornaments and hold on to the tree branches. She alson likes to drink the water in the base, we just can't stop her from doing that. (Manx cats don't have a tail! I love that about my cat)

All those dangling things and the chance to climb something, I had to wait until mine were a little bit older to get a tree and even still I find ornaments in my closet that they stole in the middle of the night.

If you think about it the x-mas tree is a big toy for your cat the hanging ornaments excite your kitty and your kitty wants to play with them. There is also the fact that it's a tree and they would want to climb it. if it's real they also might smell a unknown smell the want to discover.
