I know how you feel. I'm OK now but suffered for about a year and got it under control with tablets.
I found it quite incredible how other people would 'come out' as soon as I mentioned my problems. I am very lucky as I live in a small seaside town where the community is really lovely and so I felt confident to speak out.
I do believe that depression should be talked about more because it is, truly, as common as colds.
The more people talk about it the less stigma will remain attached to this mental health problem. The less alone we'll feel, too!

Firstly, you should be seeing a counsellor not a councillor. The distinction is very important. If you look in the yellow pages for a councillor, you'll get through to a local government department. These tend to exacerbate the symptoms of depression.
I urge you to give counselling another try, maybe with a different counsellor, they are only people after all and it might be that you just didn't get on with each other first time round.
Be _VERY_ careful in seeking support networks on the internet. There are a lot of sick people who's pathology is not quite so benign to others. However having said that, there are many genuinely helpful people. You need to keep your wits about you.
Personally, I've found that talking to depressed people actually makes my own symptoms worse. I end up comparing myself with others and feeling worse about my condition as a result. The important things to realise are that:
You are unique.
You matter.
You are not alone.
Also, under NO circumstances compare yourself against others, either good or bad. If you find yourself doing this just tell yourself "STOP", then remind yourself of the above three points.
Good luck.

Talking therapy is wonderful. I suffer with Depression and have done on and off for the past 8 years. I have had one to one therapy and one to one counselling, both are OK, but by far the best is Group Therapy where you can talk to other people who suffer from Depression. People who don't suffer from it can never relate to it. I know from experience that bottling things up is the WORST thing you can do. You will feel better once you start talking to other people who can relate to what you are going through and the difficulties you are facing. You can email me anytime, I would be more than happy to talk.

I have found that the best people to talk to about depression are those that have been there before cos they know what you are going through. I have also found that the ivillage website has some good message boards - specifically around coping with depression, that might be worth a look? They helped me anyway. Hope this helps x

You might want to try some of the online forums such as Psych Central
http://forums.psychcentral.com/postlist.php?Cat=&Board=depression
Depression Forums
http://www.depressionforums.org/forums/
and Depression Support1 Group (which is a Yahoo group)
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/depressionsupport1/?yguid=1798168
Also do a search through the others Yahoo groups and you may find something else.
Good luck :)

For my cure, it was a combination of talking to a psychiatrist and very close friends and taking appropriate medication.
I didn't find it that helpful talking to counsellors, other very ill depressives or reading up about the subject.
Remember. Depression is a curable illness.

It is hard to talk to people who do not have depression about your own, they simply don't get it. They think that unless you're slitting your wrists or spending days in bed, you aren't really suffering from this illness. If there is a suicide hotline in your area you might be able to call them and ask for a referral to a depression support group in your area.

Hi, I've been dealing with depression my whole life, at the best of times I feel like I've just lost a game and there'll be another at the worst of times I feel like God hates me and feel as though there is no hope. I've been feeling quite bad lately, but as long as I have a few goals that can be achieved I feel like fulfilling them. It's difficult to tell you how I feel in only a few words, if you'd like to know more let me know, also be interested to hear about what's troubling you. : )
