If you have never rode a horse than I would not recommend barrel racing. There are 3 barrels in a triangle, and you must run around all 3 and back to the starting line for the best time. You are full speed on a horse and it requires lots of experience. You will probably maim yourself if you try.

Barrel racing is a speed event in a rodeo that usually women participate in. It consists of three barrels set up in a cloverleaf pattern within an arena. It is a timed event. The rider must gallop her horse, turning each barrel in a certain pattern. If you don't follow the pattern, you're disqualified. If you knock over a barrel, you get a five second penalty. The rider with the best time wins. Depending on the size of the arena, times usually run about 14 to 18 seconds.

I don't suggest you jump on a horse and decide to barrel race. Try taking a lesson or two to see if you enjoy riding horses. If you do, take lessons on how to barrel race and maybe compete at a few local shows/rodeos. If you don't like horses, don't ride. Riding horses is a passion, not a hobby. You have to truly love riding horses and being around them if you want to do anything with them. Who knows - maybe just that will happen to you? well good luck

Its mostly a female rodeo sport, but some men do perform also. Barrel Racing consists of 3 barrels set in a triangular position in an arena. First you come out of the back area of the arena and charge towards your first barrel on either the left or the right. After you do this, lets say you choose the left first, you go to the right side barrel. Then after that you come to the top barrel of the triangular position and come around the barrel and charge back to the area where you started from while trying to get the best time and not knocking over any of the barrels. If you knock oneof the barrels down, its a penalty. Fastest time wins (of course). If you can, try and watch some of the PRCA National finals rodeo on ESPN when they broadcast it. It is usually the second to last competition they run before they run the bull riding. Its fairly simple to figure out, but pretty hard to compete because you need a very fast horse that has alot of agility to race around barrels without falling over or knocking down barrels. Good luck getting started and I wish you the best!

What Is Barrel Racing?
Barrel Racing is a timed event, where rider and horse race around three barrels in a clover leaf pattern. The barrels are set up in a triangular formation, with the third barrel being the top point of the triangle. You can either go to the left or right barrel first.

The trick in barrel racing is to make your turns as sharp and fluid as possible. Speed comes after. You will always have a faster run if your turns are good, no matter how fast you're going.

The average time it takes to complete a barrel race varies depending on the size of pen. In a smaller pen times can be as fast as 12 seconds. However, in a larger pen times can be around 18 seconds. Regardless, the difference between first and second place is usually hundredth's of a second.

The Rules
The rules vary between associations, but there are some standard rules that are shared universally. First, you must stay on course; if you fail to remain on course you receive a "no time". Secondly, a knocked barrel, depending on the association, is either a "no time" or is a five second penalty. Thirdly, all show etiquette, including attire must be adhered by at all times.

Barrel racing is: when several barrels are set out in different arrangement. The rider and horse is timed on how fast they can cut around the barrels and get back to their starting points. If the horse knocks over a barrel then points are against them.

It is a speed event in which the horse and rider try to complete a course around barrells in the least amount of time without knocking over the barrelss. The barrells are arranged in a triangular fashion with a start/finish line. Fastest time around the predetermined course wins.

1. ignore your first answerer
2. do not try to do competition sports, especially speed-related sports without knowing how to ride a horse (well) first!
3. barrel racing is a competitive timed sport where each contestant races their horse around 3 barrels (one circle around each barrel) and then back to the start, and is timed while doing so. their times are compared to the times of the other contestants and whoever does it the fastest and with the most accuracy wins.
