It all depends, if you have adopted a older cat and he has never been an outdoor one he will probably get lost. If you train him since little he will know but might choose one day to not come back or something might happen to him. My cats are all indoor cats, there are too many cars are crazy people out there for my taste

No they usually don't run away if they are getting, food, a feeling of safety and attention they'll be back. One of the few times I've seen cats not come back is when they start receiving these things some where else and those people keep the cats inside. They soon become use to their new home.
Allot of times the cat will return to its original home even after six months.

I don't have outdoor cats, i get too affraid that they will get hit by a car, or taken in by someone else who thinks they are a stray. But people who do have outdoor cats, their kitty always comes home for dinner, and a warm place to sleep.

it would only be a problem if you moving properties a good way to introduce a cat into a new home is by putting butter on its feet on arrival that way it will always follow its scent back home and not get lost but generally they come back home because its not actually there home its the fact that they are returning to there teritory they form a domain when they are accepted in a home and they dont dare let anyone step on it they know where they will get love, food, affection, and so on they would rather go back there then struggle without those things.....

Cats are "homed" in some ways better than dogs, which doesn't mean that they won't wander away for a day or two on an adventure, but they know where to find food and water and shelter.

Cats are not stupid! They won't run away, unless they want to. My cat goes outside at night and hangs out with the other neighborhood cats. My cat scratches at my window and I get up and let her in. She is smart, I think all cats are!

I see lots of people say its about food: NO! Cats get fed by lots of people, but would come back to the home they know its theirs.
They have their territory and mark it, plus they recognize their human, if the human spent any time at all showing them affection, that is.
There are people who steal cats.

sometimes they do, if the cat doestn want to be there. most cats have a sense of saftey inside their home, and therefore, although they might like to go exploring, make sure that they know their way home because... well think about it, YOU have a home, when you go out to chill with your friends your not planning on becoming a hobo are you?

someone once told me you can try to pick a cat. and you can try to own a cat, but if that cat wants nothing to do with you it'll find who it wants to be with and where it wants to be. If you've ever seen Homeward Bound that explains animals and cats quite well. They all have senses of where home is and where their family is that they claim.
