Apart from those occuring naturally, the chemicals are added to speed up the drying process of the tobacco. That's why chemicals found in cigars and pipe tobacco are different, the leaves for them being dried more naturaly.

if you want chemical free ciggies, buy American Spirit, all you get is tobacco, and they dont use chemical fertilizers on the plants either, they take a long time to smoke tho, at work during any cig breaks everyone else smokes two to my one, so you tend to smoke fewer of them, and they dont make you cough either!
I am not saying they are good for you, or that smoking is a good thing, but why take in more chemicals than you have to!
you can get them online in the UK from here: http://www.the-tobacconist.co.uk/specialist_cig_menu.asp
they are more expensive, but as I say you smoke a lot fewer due to the higher quality of the tobacco.

One of the main additives to the tobacco in ready-made cigarettes is saltpetre, which is added to make the cigarettes burn without going out. Most hand-rolling tobacco, and pipe tobacco, is innocent of this substance. Top quality cigars, such as Havanas, and those from the Dominican Republic and Honduras, are equally free of products that prolong burning.
It should be noted, however, that many of the chemicals that show up in the analysis of tobacco smoke are purely the results of burning. Certain suspected carcinogens found in cigarette smoke are also found in cooked bacon (smoked or unsmoked), and the chemical cocktail found in infused coffee is quite scary.
Nicotine is not added to tobacco - it is a natural product of the leaf that can be released by burning tobacco, or by ingesting tobacco by means of snuff or chew.
There is a degree of bias in the smoking debate. The anti-smoking lobby have access to reams of medical evidence which is viewed as totally objective. Any counter-arguments produced by the tobacco industry are going to be jumped upon and crushed on the basis that the tobacco industry whitewashes tobacco consumption to protect its profits.
From a personal point of view, I, as a pipe-smoker, accept that there is a risk to my health from smoking, but I am sceptical of the viewpoint that people passively 'smoking' my pipe smoke in a pub are at any greater risk to their health than I am from passively breathing other peoples car exhaust fumes (I do not own a car).
Polycyclic Aromatic Hrdrocarbons have beec cited as the greatest risk in tobacco smoke. They are emitted in particulate form from the burning of diesel fuel.
I rest my case. Unfortunately, I cannot challenge the Jury.
