Yes, Jake is right. Aikido teaches you to use your 'attackers' energy against themselves. Thus enabling 'smaller, weaker' people to defend themselves without too much sweat.
It does, however, take time to learn. But, practise does make perfect.

Judo...

Additional: Aikido was derived from the same form of Ju Jitsu Judo was. Aki Ryu Ju Jitsu. So a lot of the same techniques are tought in both. Yes Judo is mainly tought with the use of a gi, but then I don't see too many attackers beeing topless... Also Judo is not an agressive art it literaly means "the Gentle Way."
Also most self defence classes are based on Judo and in fact the Canadian RCMP selected Judo over any other style to train there police in. As do many other police force around the world, including Japan. So with all the martial arts out there why do you think so many poice forces and military incorperate Judo into all their training.
Aikido is great as well. But although it is not dificult to learn and interesting. It is alot of time and practice to get to a point where you can make it all work in an attack situation. One reason why you don't see Aikido tournaments, or any fighters in MMA with Aikido training. With Judo on the other hand with only a couple throws and breaking grip techniques which are basics tought to white belts you would have enough to at the very least get away from your attacker.
Yes I am biased as a Judoka my self however if you read the facts about it and compare it to some other arts. As far as self defence styles it is one of the best if not the best. Especialy for people will little or know previous training.
And how can Karate help you if your attacker has already grabed you or tackled you to the ground. Remember we're talking defence not one guy calling you on and you saying ok I'm gonna kick your *** with my training.

Aikido is a very non aggressive Martial Art (because it uses the opponents energy to your advantage instead of fighting strength for strength), but some of it's techniques may not be practical in a street fight situation (as many other Martial Arts are also in this self same boat). but it's better than not knowing anything at all.

Martial arts, also known as fighting systems, are bodies of codified practices or traditions of training for unarmed and armed combat, usually without the use of guns and other modern weapons. People study martial arts for various reasons including fitness, self-cultivation (meditation), mental/character development, and self-defense. Every martial art is supposedly used to defend oneself with minimum effort.

Uechi-Ryu Karate. Judo uses quite a bit of energy and many of the moves require a gi or heavy coat. Aikido does use the attacker's energy but for it to be useful in an actual fight it would have to be aggressive aikido and it would take you a long time to perfect.

Uechi Ryu is a real-fighting based system. It will take time to learn as well but the techniques learned are applicable to real life from day 1. The short stance is more useful in a fight, by allowing you to move and still be stable on all sides. Uechi utilizes simple kicks, powerful punches as well as knees and elbows. The untrained stand no chance.

Shaolin Dragon kung fu is a style that emphasizes efficiency of motion (therefore, low energy expenditure) where opponents are disposed of in seconds. We do not try to get in a contest of who is the harder striker or drawn out punch fest. It is an art refined in actual warfare where the practitioner has to get rid of as many enemies as possible without tiring out and being unable to defend oneself. The combination of precision strikes, joint locks, pressure points etc make this benign-looking art quite brutal and nasty in reality.

The one that uses the least amount of energy is defiantly Akikdo, but the downside is it takes a long time to learn and master, and the moves you learn in Akikdo are for specific set attacks, so you'll have to be good at improvising.

There is a special martial art that is designed for the sole purpose of defense and the avoidence of fighting. I don't remember what it was called though.
