I own a 2 year old male Bullmastiff. I was looking into breeding him and I couldn't believe how much these puppies were going for. I bought my dog 6 months ago from a woman who could not care for him anymore and paid a quarter of what the newspapers are asking! I love this breed of dog but I was curious as to why they are so expensive to buy. Any ideas?

The only reason: supply and demand.
Same reason pound puppies are so inexpensive.

I don't know for sure, but my guess would be because they are not the most popular breed out there. And also, different breeders ask for different prices, and you are usually paying for quality, like a good breeder will pay A LOT of money to get their dogs tested for certain diseases, and x-rayed for healthy hips and other joints. This way they know that they are breeding good healthy dogs. This is what a GOOD breeder will do, and this is why i would suspect they are so expensive. Not all breeders do this, but they are supposed to. Also, a lot of bull mastiffs have to have C-Sections, which also cost a lot of money. And i think a little has to do with the fact that they CAN charge that much because they are not VERY popular.

Is there some reason you are interested into studding out your male? Is he a champion with excellent bloodlines/temperment/health?

I believe the heads of the pups are so large, that there is usually a c-section involved for the birth. Not sure though.

Please avoid cancers/unwanted behaviors etc....get your pretty pet neutered.

My jeweler had mastiffs ages ago, and I remember him saying how hard it was for the female to give birth, the puppies are large and their heads are huge, etc.

Most have to be born by C-section, wouldn't surprise me if they have to be bred by an AI as well, being they are so heavy.

They are not a common breed and the pups are hard to birth. Please don't breed your dog, get him fixed.
