Yes I sometimes eat or drink out of date stuff depending on what it is.
A lot of the dates on food are only there as a guide for when best to eat it. Some food that is perfectly acceptable to eat ends up thrown away because of the dates and you end up buying more food unnecessarily, thus giving the shops more money because of this.

Many dates are recommendations only. For example, you can still eat eggs that are kept in the original carton for up to 3 weeks after the date on the end. It is not recommended that you use them for some recipes however, especially baking, as they will not allow your cakes to rise, or your brownies to retain moisture as well, etc.
A lot of food companies will put an expiration date ahead of the actual expiration just to get you to throw it out and buy more...
As far as most other things go though, use your best judgment... It it smells funny, or looks bad, don't eat it!

Hi, if it only like a day out maybe i will eat it, but if its really out of date and has to be refrigerated anyway then yes i would through it out. As i dont really look forward to having food poisoning, I think if you buy food that you dont want to waste you should either freeze it or eat it before the sell by date. I know a few people who eat stuff out of date just for it not to go to waste, but i think that health is more impotant. So i would throw anything away even if its out of date the day before, it still wont taste the same.

Always throw it away. Then again, when things are out of date in my fridge they are REALLY out of date. My husband never throws anything away so by the time they have made it to the bin, they have alien life-forms growing on them.

I give it the sniff test if it smells OK i eat it , if its borderline i turn it into a vindaloo that usually kills any bacteria off, if i can hear it moving around in the fridge its time for it to go !

It depends upon what it is, how old it is, how it smells, etc. The "best before" date is an estimate. How could food be fine one day and suddenly not fine the next? Most food, if properly stored, is good beyond that date.

take into account the expiry date, the condition of whatever it is and common sense, then eat it. lay off road kill though thats not too good to eat.although badger is good if its not bloated on a hot day.
most expiry dates are there to protect the companies who make the product. i eat if out of date and use own judgement and i have been ok as a result, the nurses tell me the same when they stop to speak to me through the slit in my isolation cell, waaaahhhheeeeyyyy!

Meat gets thrown out - I've tried my luck with out-of-date ham before, with unfortunate results. Milk also tastes disgusting. Chocolate's usually ok, but I usually try to eat stuff, cos it's a waste if you don't.

Play it by ear, or nose. If it smells ok then eat it. With cheese I just cut the mouldy bit off, unless its stilton. Sell by dates are a rough guide by the manafacturers to cover their asses and also sell more produce.
