I was wondering at what age was it ok to start training our 5 week old puppy. I mean now is too soon but when is it ok to start training like leash walking, sitting, commands? We have already started the potty training and Cocoa's doing well. Also I was wondering how do you train your dog to be protective of me and my husband or does that come naturally? I want her to be protective but not to bite EVERYONE that comes over. I hope everyone can help me with ANYTHING you can tell me to start training her the right way. ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING IS HELPFUL. Also how much are you suppose to feed a 5 week old puppy how much and how many times a day. Thank You

Training

Mixed-breed puppyTraining puppies is not always easy: it requires work. Puppies shouldn't be touched and held from birth, although only briefly and occasionally until their eyes and ears open. After that, it is critical for their socialization that they interact often with humans. Otherwise the puppy may become vicious.

Puppies can begin learning what a leash feels like as soon as they are old enough to begin exploring outside their whelping box, just by attaching a leash to their collar and letting them pull it behind them, then walking with the puppy around the house or yard holding onto one end of the leash.

Training of basic obedience can begin at the same time, although recommendations for how intense and how soon vary. Training for young puppies is generally recommended to be light, gentle, and fun, more like a game than an exercise. Most formal puppy classes accept puppies starting at three months of age, although some provide socialization classes for younger pups.

Housebreaking can also begin by the time the puppy is two to three months old, although they simply do not have the physical control of their bodies to be completely reliable until they are six months to a year old.

Good luck with the training. I adopted two puppies last spring and in my search for answers found everyon'e advice varied some. So here's mine for what it is worth. Feeding should be at least 3 times per day until 4 months - then 2 times per day. Housetraining you can take her to her paper or out starting anytime and praise praise praise - but don't reprimand - she's is too young to hold it and will learn potty is bad so she'll hide it from you...... As for the sit etc.....mine really didn't start catching on until 5 months - but now at 8 months do all kinds of fun things - the key is keep it fun. We started formal obedience training at 7 months and have a long way to go. Again - good luck and enjoy the puppy days - they are so fun!

You should show the puppy whos the master the first day it came to your house, dont let him sleep on your bed let the puppy know your the pack leader because if your puppy thinks he should be one when hes older it can turn into a big problem he wont do anything you tell him thinking Im the pack leader dont tell me what to do,so put your puppy on the right track at early age.Leash is about -3 month old imean not walking him just so he would get use to it take him out to the backyard for 20 minutes everyday with a leash when he is 2-3 months old.commands will come later and depends on your dog breed, smart dogs, you can teach them at months chichuahua in later.and you should go to a puppy training school it really helps, they teach them properly because if you dont do it properly your dog will be most likely ruined.and it seems that you didnt do any research before you got him....read books.....go and buy books, its a shamenobody reads books.

Begin training at about 6 weeks of age, the leash and all the little commands you want it to learn....use small pieces of puppy food to train with...the treats are way to high in fat and calories they don't need. Right now you should be feeding it puppy food soaked in puppy milk (not cow's milk) and feeding 2-3 times per day is good. At about 6 weeks, change to dry puppy food only....feed according to breed and weight of the puppy(chart on the package of food). The protective part usually comes natural for each dog and it's family.

You really do have her kind of young. She should have been with her mother for another 2 to 3 weeks. You actually are already starting to train her, just by giving her a name and calling her to come to you. Protective is one thing...as in barking to let you know there's someone outside, but do you really want her to bite anyone? That's a lawsuit waiting to happen. Being a noisemaker when there's a strange sound outside is what I prefer.

To make your dog protective of you and your husband, you cant really train a dog for that. That does come naturally, he will feel close to you and whenever it is his time to be protective, he will show it. However, if your dog is a small type of dog, chances are that it wont be that protective, it will only warn you. Bigger dogs are better at being protective and do more than warn you. But remember that it does come naturally from the dog if he is close to you.

We started about a 3 months, but that was because our dog really intelligent. It says in books to start around 5 months. You can start getting your puppy use to the words but she might be too young to get the idea of commands.

when he hits teh age of 2 months then start. now for potty training this sounds cruel but it works ask yur local vet crate train yur dog what you do is put food and water in his/her crate because dogs will not go to the bathroom if they have food and water in same water. only put in crate when gone and let outside immediatly when home and say go potty and when he does say good boy he will eventually get the right idea and maybe at night this teaches them how to control their blatter hope i helped

I would say to start walking your dog as soon as possible. Walking will allow your dog to see you are the master of the house and it will help with you training it later.
