Do not use beef. That's blasphemy. A Shepherd keeps sheep. A true shepherd's pie uses left-over roast lamb or mutton which is minced up together with onion and add salt and pepper to taste. Combine it with the gravy also sometimes leftover and put in deep pie dish. Top with a layer of mashed potato and a couple of dots of butter and bake about 350deg until golden brown. It' so simple and tastes great.

Use 1 pound of lean ground beef. Cook the onions in it along with garlic powder, salt, pepper until it is browned. Line your pie plate with your pie crust. Pour the cooked ground beef, and onions into the crust and spread it flat. Put 1 can of creamed corn layered over the ground beef. Mix up a large batch of instant potatoes at least enough for 6 servings, and put this on the top of the layer of corn. Don't worry if it heaps up pretty tall. Put extra salt and pepper, and maybe a dash of paprika over top, and place in an oven at 350 degrees until the top browns slightly. Easy, and good!

INGREDIENTS

* 1 pound lean ground beef
* 1 onion, chopped
* 1 (28 ounce) can peeled and crushed tomatoes
* 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
* salt to taste
* 2 cups instant mashed potato flakes
* 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese

DIRECTIONS

1. Heat oil in frying pan. Add chopped onions, and fry until golden brown. Add ground beef, and keep stirring until meat is browned. Add crushed tomatoes, and continue to cook until liquid from the tomatoes evaporates. Salt to taste.
2. In the meantime, prepare the mashed potatoes as directed on the packet.
3. Spread the meat mixture into the bottom of an oven proof dish. Cover with a layer of mashed potatoes, and top with grated cheese.
4. Bake for 10 minutes at 400 degrees F (205 degrees C), or until cheese has melted and browned.
